Imagine dropping two grand on a brand-new MacBook Pro with Apple’s shiny new M5 chip, only to have the thing creak every time you open the lid or rest your palms on it. That’s the situation one Redditor says he’s stuck with — and his attempts to get Apple to fix or replace it have only made him more frustrated.

The user, noss616, says the creaking started only two weeks after buying a 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro. He noticed the sound coming from the hinge area and even the palm rest when applying light pressure. With a clear video recording in hand and AppleCare+ freshly activated, he took the laptop to an Apple Store expecting a straightforward swap.

Instead, he claims staff told him they couldn’t find anything wrong. So he tried a second store. Same result — and an explanation that’s now making the rounds online. According to noss616, an employee told him the sound was just “metal on metal body” contact and “completely normal,” before adding that they didn’t want to replace the machine because it could create “an endless cycle of exchanges” if the next one made the same noise.

One commenter identifying as a former Genius Bar technician backed up part of that reasoning, saying hinge creaks are usually categorized as cosmetic issues and often aren’t covered unless they affect functionality. At least one person said they received a same-day replacement after escalating the issue to store leadership.

For noss616, a first-time Mac buyer who spent about $2,000 plus AppleCare+ for peace of mind, the whole experience has been a rough introduction to Apple’s service ecosystem. The M5 MacBook Pro lineup has been widely praised for performance and battery life, but small issues like this are a reminder that even Apple’s premium hardware can ship with quirks — and that some frontline staff may be hesitant to authorize exchanges unless absolutely necessary.

Some Reddit users are urging him to give the hinge a bit more time, suggesting the noise might settle on its own. “If it ends up being a problem they will sort it,” one commenter wrote. Others echoed the Apple Store staff’s stance, with one user saying he was “requesting service for something that is within specification.” Meanwhile, some commenters advised him to escalate the issue to higher-level Apple support if the creaking persists.

Whether that gets him a quiet, non-creaky replacement is unclear. For now, his post is a painful reminder that “it just works” doesn’t always extend to the hinges.

Apple has been working on new MacBook Pro models for some time now, and it appears that the Cupertino-based technology giant is now finally all set to launch the new laptops.

Ahead of the official launch, the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro model has been spotted on Canada’s regulatory database, indicating that the launch of the device isn’t too far.

Apple MacBook Pro

The regulatory database listing reveals that the MacBook Pro laptop will come packed with Wi-Fi 6E support. The current MacBook Pro models come with support for Wi-Fi 6 standard, which is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

The certificate number for the device with Apple MacBook Pro branding is 579C-A2779. Apart from the upgraded support for the wireless network, the devices are also expected to have a few changes compared to the current generation models, including more ports, a notch on top of the screen, and more.

Rumors indicate that the Apple MacBook Pro could come in two sizes — 14-inch and 16-inch, powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. It is also being said that the devices could launch later today through a press release shared by the company. Given that the laptop has appeared in the regulatory database, the launch is happing very soon, which is in line with the rumors of the device launching today.

The new MacBook Pro models were expected to go official this year, but the product has been getting delayed internally, and now it appears that the company has finally fixed whatever the issue was and is gearing up to launch the devices early next year.

As of now, there’s no specific launch date available for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, but we expect the laptops to get launched around March 2023. Apart from the upgraded chips and maybe faster RAM, the laptops are not expected to have any other major change compared to the current models.

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro currently available in the market were launched in October last year and come powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. They feature a new design where the display has a notch at the top-center of the screen. It also comes with an HDMI port, a MagSafe port, and an SD card reader slot.

Apart from the new MacBook Pro models, the report adds that the company is also working on a new iMac which will be powered by an M3 chip and is expected to launch by the end of 2023. The company is also reportedly working on new Apple Mac Mini powered by the M2 series chip, but no launch timeline is available for now.

Apple recently unveiled its latest iPad and iPad Pro models, along with a new Apple TV 4K. Now, the next lineup of products to get refreshed is the highly anticipated MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models.

The new Apple MacBook Pro models were expected to go official this month, i.e. in October but a new report from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests that the launch has been delayed to next month.

According to the report, the new 14-inch and 16-inch models of the MacBook Pro in November but an exact launch date is not yet known. The company also has a history of launching new MacBook models in November, which it did in the year 2019 and 2020.

Previously, we reported that Apple is planning to launch new MacBook Pro laptops as early as the fall of this year, but the launch could get delayed because of supply chain issues.

The upcoming laptop models will come powered by the Apple Silicon’s M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, which are not yet officially announced by the Cupertino-based tech giant. There were rumors about the upcoming M2 Pro and M2 Max chips being manufactured using the 3nm process, but recent reports have indicated that the company will stick to the 5nm process for the new chips.

If the reports are to be believed, then the company is expected to move from the N5 process of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips to the newer N5P process by TSMC. As of now, there’s not much information available about the upcoming Pro models of the MacBook, but it’s likely that there won’t be any major changes in terms of design, and we’ll mostly see internal upgrades for better performance.
