Xiaomi first introduced the Explorer Edition with a transparent back panel on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition which was released in 2018. The company added an Explorer edition to last year’s Mi 9 flagship lineup. However, Xiaomi released a shocker earlier this year, hinting that the Mi 10 won’t get the transparent version.

In a surprise development, pictures of a Mi 10 model with a transparent rear panel has been shared by Xiaomi’s Marketing department. The design was achieved by swapping the back cover with a transparent glass panel. Thus, you get to see the actual internals of the Mi 10 unlike the Mi 9 and Mi 8 Explorer editions that had dummy internals on display. The Mi 10 internals look quite neat and beautiful such that you won’t distinguish it from the previous iterations. The transparent panel shows the camera, flash, battery, wireless charging coil, and a large area of double-layer thermally conductive graphite covering the entire motherboard area is clearly shown.

The development has prompted some fans to request that the company launch such back covers and provide after-sales replacements for fans who’d want to have it on their phones. That isn’t likely to happen but we may see third-party transparent glass panels soon.

In 2018, Xiaomi surprised us when it announced the Mi 8 flagship. Unlike its predecessor, the Mi 6, which only had one model, the Mi 8 brought along a Screen Fingerprint Edition (Pro version) and an Explorer Edition with a transparent glass back. There were two mid-range models too – the Mi 8 SE and the Mi 8 Lite. Last year, there were even more models. Alongside the standard Mi 9, they announced the Mi 9 Explorer, Mi 9 Pro 5G, Mi 9 SE, and Mi 9 Lite. Xiaomi also launched the Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro. However, things will be different this year.

The Explorer comes home

According to Digital Chat Station, there will be no Mi 10 Explorer Edition with a transparent glass back this year. We have no idea why but hope more details will surface in the near future. However, we presume sales might not have been stellar, hence the reason for not launching one this year. At the moment, there is no information about a Mi 10 SE or Mi 10 Lite.

No new Mi Pad in development

The leaker also revealed there is no new Mi Pad tablet in development. The last Xiaomi tablet, the Mi Pad 4, was released in 2018, and to be honest, we are better off without another Xiaomi tablet. The Chinese giant didn’t release the MIUI 11 update for the Mi Pad 4 and Mi Pad 4 Plus, which means it no longer offers software support for the two tablets. Based on this, we will not advise our readers to pick up any future Xiaomi tablet, if there will be one, unless things change for the better.

Mi 10 series sticking to 1080p displays

Another key info he revealed is that the Mi 10 series will not have a 2K 120Hz display. Xiaomi has always kept the resolution of its flagships at 1080p and it appears it is sticking to that for the upcoming Mi 10 series.

While this may be surprising to some, it will not be to others. Xiaomi probably has a reason for not jumping on the QHD+ train, and if you ask us, we will say it’s because of the price. A higher-resolution display costs more and will increase the cost of production which will translate to a higher selling price of the device.

Xiaomi is expected to unveil its new flagships in February before MWC 2020. A leaked poster says the launch event will hold on February 11, the same day Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S20 series.
