Motorola launched the Moto G9 series last year. All the devices in the lineup debuted with Android 10. Now, months after their release, three models, namely Moto G9, Moto G9 Power, and Moto G9 Play have finally started receiving the Android 11 update.

According to a report by PiunikaWeb, Motorola, the sub-brand of Lenovo, has started rolling out the Android 11 update for Moto G9, Moto G9 Power, and Moto G9 Play. Like any other OTA system update, the latest software update for these handsets is being seeded out in batches.

In simpler words, the new update is only available for a select few users in certain regions. Anyway, the update should reach all the users in different regions in the coming days.

Going by the update track record of Motorola, Android 11 should be the first and the last major update for Moto G9, Moto G9 Power, and Moto G9 Play. But these handsets will likely receive security updates for quite a while.

A few years back, Motorola was known for its software support. At times, the company used to deliver security patches before Google rolls out for Nexus devices. The firm was even quicker at rolling out Android updates.

In 2019, Motorola launch a wide range of smartphones in various markets. By launching the Motorola Edge and Edge+ also returned to launch flagship phones this year. Today, the company confirmed the names of the smartphones that are eligible to receive the Android 11 OS upgrade.

Among the various phones last year by Motorola, the Android 11 OS update will be only made available to the Motorola Razr (2019), Motorola One Action, Motorola One Vision, and Motorola One Hyper. The list does not include phones like the Moto G7 series, Moto G8 Plus, G8 Play, E6 series, Z4, and One Zoom.

Among the phones launched this year, the Motorola Razr 5G, Motorola Edge, Motorola Edge+, Motorola One 5G, Motorola One Fusion, Motorola One Fusion+, Moto G8, Moto G8 Power, Moto G 5G, Moto G 5G Plus, Moto G Fast, Moto G Power, Moto G Pro, Moto G Stylus, Moto G9, Moto G9 Play, Moto G9 Plus, and Moto G9 Power are mentioned in the list of devices that will be treated with Android 11 OS update. The only Lenovo-branded phone on the list is the Lenovo K12 Note that debuted in the recent past in Saudi Arabia.

The Moto E (2020), Moto E6s (2020), Moto G8 Power Lite, Motorola One Vision, and Moto E7 phones that went official this year are not mentioned in the list. Hence, it is unclear whether these devices will receive the Android 11 OS update or not.

Lenovo did not confirm when it will begin rolling out the Android 11 OS update. Probably, the flagship and upper mid-range phones could be the first phones that will be updated to the newest version of Android. The Lenovo K12 Note mid-range phone went official earlier this week. The discreetly announced phone arrived as a rebranded version of the Indian Moto G9 (also known a Moto G9 Play in Europe). The K12 features a tall aspect ratio display, a 48-megapixel triple camera setup, and a large-sized battery.

Lenovo is no longer a popular player in the smartphone market. Ever since the company acquired Motorola, it has been focussing more on that brand rather than its own due to nostalgia and brand power associated with its subsidiary. The Chinese company has now reached a certain point that it is rebranding Motorola devices as its own. The newly certified Lenovo K12 Note is nothing but a rebadged Moto G9 Play/Moto G9 (India).

According to Google Play Console, the upcoming Lenovo K12 Note is codenamed guamp. It will sport an HD+ (720 x 1600 pixels) with 280 DPI. Under the hood, it will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 chipset and 4GB RAM. Last but not least, it will run Android 10 out of the box.

The above mentioned specs and the image included in the listing confirms that this phone is indeed a rebranded Moto G9 Play. This Motorola device debuted in late August in Europe and last week in the UK. 

What’s even more interesting is that this very same Moto G9 Play handset is sold as the vanilla Moto G9 in India. That means Lenovo is selling it with three different names across the world. That said, we are not certain where the K12 Note will launch first.

A few years back, Lenovo K series smartphones were one of the best budget phones available in the market. Those devices would compete directly with Xiaomi Redmi series phones. Unfortunately, slowly and steadily, the company not only gave up on this popular series but also its entire smartphone lineup.

Back in July, Lenovo released its first gaming smartphone called Legion Duel. Sadly, it is still limited to China and the company is yet to confirm if it will ever hit global markets.

It has similar specifications to the Redmi 9 Prime, but it is not exactly the same phone. And it carries a very interesting price. But is its price more interesting than the offerings from the concurrence or you can get something better? Motorola Moto G9 vs Xiaomi POCO M2 vs Realme Narzo 10

Design

POCO M2, Motorola Moto G9, and Realme Narzo 10 are nothing special if we talk about the design. They are cheap phones made of polycarbonate, but this does not mean they have bad aesthetics. These handsets come with narrow bezels around the display, waterdrop notches, and even protection against water (they are water-repellent but not waterproof). Despite it might look more outdated at a first glance, I like the Realme Narzo 10 due to its smaller camera module, and it is also slightly more compact than its two rivals.

Display

Realme Narzo 10 and Motorola Moto G9 are a bit disappointing when it comes to the display: not only they have IPS panels, but they come with below-average HD+ resolution. Instead, the POCO M2 features a Full HD+ panel providing a higher level of detail. Given that these phones feature wide 6.5-inch panels, the resolution might make the difference for a lot of users. In each case, you get a cheap IPS panel, nothing special, so you’d better focus on the rest of the specifications.

Specs & Software

Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2 are built around a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, while Motorola Moto G9 is powered by the Snapdragon 662. Despite most people trust Qualcomm more than MediaTek, the Helio G80 is actually a more powerful chipset than the Snapdragon 662: that is why Motorola Moto G9 loses this comparison. Between Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2, the latter wins because it packs a higher amount of RAM (6 GB vs 4 GB). In each case, you get Android 10 out of the box, but while on the Motorola Moto G9 it is close to stock Android, on the Realme Narzo 10 and the POCO M2 it is highly customized.

Camera

On the paper, the most advanced camera department belongs to the Realme Narzo 10, which sports a 48 MP quad-camera including an ultrawide sensor and a pair of 2 MP lenses for macro and depth info. Even the front camera is superior on the Realme Narzo 10 with its 16 MP resolution. Right after, we got the Motorola Moto G9 with its 48 MP triple camera. POCO M2 is disappointing: it still features a quad-camera, but its main sensor is an inferior 13 MP unit. If you want a good camera phone, you should not choose the POCO M2.

Battery

POCO M2, Realme Narzo 10, and Motorola Moto G9 come with exactly the same battery capacity: 5000 mAh. But given that the POCO M2 features a Full HD+ display (higher resolution), we believe its battery life will be inferior. The Motorola Moto G9 should be better because it has an HD+ display and a more efficient processor built at 11 nm. Further, Motorola Moto G9 features a slightly faster charging technology with a 20W power (Realme Narzo 10 and POCO M2 have 18W). On the other hand, Realme Narzo 10 supports reverse charging. The battery life of the Realme Narzo 10 should be very close to the Motorola Moto G9, but unfortunately, we did not test both of these devices, so we can not give you a definitive verdict.

Price

The starting price of the Realme Narzo 10 in India is Rs. 11,999, which roughly translates into €138 or $163. Note that we are talking about the configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The POCO M2 is priced Rs. 10,999 (equivalent to about €127 or $150) in the base variant with 6/64 GB. At last, the Motorola Moto G9 has a listing price of Rs. 11,499 in the base 4/64 GB configuration, which roughly translates into €132 or $155. If we exclude the cameras, POCO M2 is actually a better phone despite it is more affordable. But if you need better cameras, then you should go either for the Realme Narzo 10. The Motorola Moto G9 is still a great device, but I actually prefer the Realme Narzo 10 due to its better front camera and reverse charging support. Naturally, that is just my preference. The Lenovo-owned company just launched the new Moto G9 in the Indian market, which later hitten the global market under the Moto G9 Play moniker. Right after, another important manufacturer came up with a new affordable phone in India: HMD Global with its Nokia 5.3 announced earlier this year. Even OPPO launched a budget phone in the last days: the OPPO A53. This is a specs comparison between the latest budget phones launched in India: Motorola Moto G9, Nokia 5.3, and OPPO A53.

Motorola Moto G9 vs Nokia 5.3 vs OPPO A53

Design

Oppo A53 has the most stunning design, at least according to my tastes. It is the only one which sports a punch-hole display, a feature which is hard to find on very affordable phones such as these ones. The Oppo A53 is also the most compact device of the trio with its narrow display bezels, smaller dimensions, and a thinner body. On the other hand, the Motorola Moto G9 has a water-repellent coating that may be useful to people who want to use it under the rain and accidentally throw it in the water.

Display

Unfortunately, you do not get great displays with these three devices. They all feature IPS panels with HD+ resolutions. They are not disappointing in terms of display quality, but they are definitely below the average due to their HD+ resolution providing a lower level of detail than midrange phones. By the way, you get very nice advantages with the Oppo A53: it has a 90 Hz refresh rate providing more smoothness and stereo speakers for a better multimedia experience. For all of these devices, there is a rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

The Nokia 5.3 wins the hardware comparison for a simple reason: it has a more powerful chipset. We are talking about the Snapdragon 665 which is actually superior to the Snapdragon 662 found on the Motorola Moto G9. Oppo A53 is the only one featuring fast UFS 2.1 storage, but unfortunately, the Oppo A53 has an even weaker Snapdragon 460 chipset. Also, note that with the Nokia 5.3 you get up to 6 GB of RAM, while Motorola Moto G9 has just 4 GB of RAM. Last but not least, Nokia 5.3 runs Android One: a special version of the operating system supported directly by Google.

Camera

The winner of the camera comparison is the Motorola Moto G9 which comes with a way better main sensor sporting a 48 MP resolution. With the Nokia 5.3 and the Oppo A53, you get a below-average 13 MP main sensor. The Nokia 5.3 looks better than Oppo A53 due to its brighter focal aperture, but the Oppo A53 has the best front camera department thanks to its 16 MP sensor. At the end of the day, despite featuring a lower amount of sensors, Motorola Moto G9 wins the camera comparison due to its better main camera. But you do not get the ultrawide sensor found on the Nokia 5.3.

Battery

The Motorola Moto G9 should provide a longer battery life: it has a way bigger battery than Nokia 5.3 and, despite having the same battery capacity as the Oppo A53, it should last more because it lacks a 90 Hz refresh rate. Last but not least, it has a faster charging technology with a 20W power.

Price

The price of Motorola Moto G9 is Rs. 11,499, while Oppo A53 is Rs. 12,999. The Nokia 5.3 costs slightly more: Rs. 13,999 in its base variant with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The Motorola Moto G9 has better cameras and probably longer battery life. The Nokia 5.3 offers Android One and a better chipset, but a smaller battery. The Oppo A53 has the 90 Hz killer feature and stereo speakers, as well as the best front cameras and a punch-hole design. Which one would you pick?

Yesterday, Motorola unveiled the Motorola Moto G9 smartphone in India. It debuted as the first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 662 mid-range chipset. Soon after its launch, there were rumors that the phone will be heading to European markets as Moto G9 Play. The news has come true as the Lenovo-owned company has announced the Moto G9 Play as a rebadged version of India’s Moto G9.

Moto G9 Play specifications and features

The Moto G9 Play has an IPS LCD panel with a waterdrop notch. The 6.5-inch screen delivers HD+ resolution and 20:9 aspect ratio. The Snapdragon 662 chipset that fuels the device is accompanied by 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. It comes with an internal storage of 64 GB and it has a microSD card for additional storage.

The Moto G9 Play comes preinstalled with My UX based Android 10 OS. The phone is packed with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 20W TurboCharge fast charging through USB-C.

Nothing special, if you want a great display quality you should not go for these two phones. Redmi 9 Prime is actually better because it has a Full HD+ display, so it offers a higher level of definition. You get a 1080p resolution and even a high 400 nits typical brightness, as well as a slightly wider panel. In each case, you get a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and mono speakers.

Redmi 9 Prime and Realme Narzo 10 are fueled by the Helio G80 mobile platform, while Motorola Moto G9 has a Snapdragon 662 chipset by Qualcomm. The most advanced camera department belongs to the Realme Narzo 10 which sports a 48 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide lens and two sensors with 2 MP resolutions for macros and depth. It even comes with a better 16 MP front camera. Right after, we got the Motorola Moto G9 with its 48 MP triple camera lacking an ultrawide sensor. The Redmi 9 Prime is pretty disappointing with its entry-level 13 MP main camera and you should not go for it if you need a decent camera phone.

Battery

Motorola Moto G9 should actually offer a longer battery life not only because of its HD+ resolution and its big battery but also because the Snapdragon 662 chipset is built with a better production process than Helio G80 (11 nm vs 12 nm). Note that we are only judging from the specs on the paper because we did not see the Moto G9 in action (it has been announced today). Moto G9 also comes with slightly faster charging (20W power).

Price

The Motorola Moto G9 is priced at Rs. 11,499, Redmi 9 Prime has an Rs. 9,999 price and Realme Narzo 10 costs Rs. 14,999. While Redmi 9 Prime comes with a more advanced display, the Realme Narzo 10 has better cameras and performance. The Moto G9 sits right in the middle and on the paper it is a Realme Narzo 10 with slightly inferior cameras and less storage.
