Samsung Display showcased a next-generation display technology called QD-LED (quantum dot LED) at the Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2024. Currently, OLED is the only commercially available self-luminous display tech, but it suffers from screen burn-in, aging, and limited brightness due to organic materials.

OLED suffers from screen burn-in and limited brightness , but not QD-LED

Existing quantum dot displays use photoluminescence, requiring a light source to enhance color. QD-LED combines high efficiency of self-luminous displays with the superior color accuracy and wide color gamut of quantum dots. It emits light directly through current and boasts higher material stability than OLED due to inorganic quantum dots.

Samsung’s prototype QD-LED panel measures 18.2 inches, ideal for large laptops, with a resolution of 3200×1800 and a pixel density of 202PPI. This panel utilizes inkjet printing for large-area pixel patterning, significantly improving production efficiency.

Samsung’s environmentally friendly QD-LED panel avoids traditional cadmium compound quantum dots and relies on a cadmium-free process. Notably, the related paper received the prestigious “Annual Outstanding Paper Award” from SID.

Research on panel technologies is ongoing, with manufacturers all striving to create the best display at the lowest cost. While Samsung, LG, and Boey are often seen as the innovators in this field, Canon has recently developed a new QD-OLED display material that uses lead instead of rare earth metals. Here are the details…

Canon Develops New QD-OLED Display Material

Canon has developed a new QD-OLED display material that uses lead in place of rare earth metals. This breakthrough could significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing QD-OLED displays and make them more widely available. QD-OLED displays are known for their high contrast ratios, wide viewing angles, and accurate color reproduction. However, they have been prohibitively expensive due to the use of rare earth metals in their production. Canon’s new material could change that.

Lead is a much more common and easily recyclable metal than rare earth metals, making it a more sustainable option. Canon’s new material is also said to be just as durable as those made with rare earth metals. This could make Canon a major player in the QD-OLED market, as it could offer a more affordable and sustainable alternative to Samsung’s products.

If commercialized successfully, Canon’s new QD-OLED display material could revolutionize the display industry. It could make high-quality OLED displays more affordable and accessible to consumers. It could also help to reduce the environmental impact of the display industry. Canon plans to commercialize its new QD-OLED display material in the mid-2020s.

The monitor features QD-OLED display which is promising image enhancement and improved color coverage. It is also touted to be the first monitor to feature QD-OLED and is priced at $1,299, lower than the OLED monitors in the market. It will be available for purchase in this spring, from 29th March.

This new Alienware AW3423DW monitor’s specifications are on the higher side as the company is targeting it towards gamers. The 34-inch display comes with 3440 x 1440 pixels screen resolution, a 175Hz refresh rate, DCI-P3 color gamut, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and 1,000nits peak brightness along with HDR support.

It also uses Samsung’s QD-OLED technology which has blue organic light-emitting diodes passed through quantum dots to generate red and green. As blue has the strongest light energy, QD-OLED in theory offers more brightness and efficiency.

As for the ports, the device has two HDMI ports, one DisplayPort, three USB 3.2 ports, an audio line-out, and a headphone jack. The stand also comes with support for adjustment for height, tilt, and swivel, as well as VESA mount option and cable management.

The QD-OLED should be as good as or better than OLED when it comes to managing burn-in. The company is also offering a three-year limited hardware warranty and adds that owners would get a replacement “by the next business day” if a unit suffers from burn-in.
