At the CES 2024, Rabbit company unveiled the Rabbit R1, an innovative handheld gadget. The Rabbit R1 is the company’s inaugural product and stands out with its compact, square design and red-orange color.

Features of Rabbit R1

The device itself is relatively straightforward in terms of hardware. It features a 2.88-inch touchscreen with rounded corners, designed by Teenage Engineering. It runs on a 2.3GHz MediaTek processor, supported by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space. The battery is designed for all-day use, and the device includes a unique rotatable camera “eye” which works as a selfie or rear camera.

Additionally, the Rabbit R1 is equipped with a large scroll wheel and a side button for initiating calls. It also has a pair of far-field microphones for voice command input, although it lacks full smartphone functionality despite having a SIM card slot.

Its primary goal is to act as a bridge between users and their smartphones, including iPhones and other devices. The Rabbit R1 and its operating system, Rabbit OS, are designed to simplify user interaction with applications. Instead of users navigating through apps to perform tasks, the Rabbit R1, powered by Atmosic’s proprietary Large Action Model (LAM) similar to large language models used in chatbots like ChatGPT, manages these tasks.

The Rabbit R1 is particularly adept at understanding and executing commands based on natural voice inputs. For instance, a user can just voice a need like, “I need a ride to the airport,” and the Rabbit R1 will handle the rest, such as activating the Uber app and arranging the ride.

The process of training the Rabbit R1 model is consistent across various categories of tasks, including making restaurant reservations, booking airline tickets, adding songs to Spotify playlists, and more. The model’s ability to understand and execute voice commands extends to a wide range of functions and services. This approach differs from traditional user interactions where one would first open an app and then execute the desired action.

Rabbit’s approach with the R1 seems to echo the path taken by Humane’s Ai Pin, focusing on controlling existing user applications through AI, rather than performing tasks independently.

Pricing and Availability

Priced at $199, it offers a cost-effective alternative to Humane’s products and does not require a subscription. The Rabbit R1 is currently available for pre-order, with shipping expected to commence in March.
