The brand was launched as a sub-brand of OPPO in 2018 with the launch of the Realme 1. Since then, the brand has gone on to release several models, spurred by the success of the first model. The sub-brand has also since graduated to an independent brand.

Realme’s smartphones offer users an alternative to the value-for-money products which Xiaomi used to gain some traction in the market. The emergence of the brand has even forced Samsung to rethink its strategy in the mid-range segment. Even Xiaomi has had to adjust with the creation of the Redmi brand and Pocophone sub-brand. Realme is about taking the bar higher as it moves towards making its device more attractive by sending the Realme X to custom ROM and kernel developers.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G may have the best haptics on an Android phone

XDA-Developers is a treasure trove of developers mostly, but not restricted to the Android OS. The community has previously teamed up with some phone manufacturers in the past to develop custom ROMs for devices. The community teamed up with Xiaomi on the Poco F1 which makes it easy for Poco F1 users to have access to several aftermarket ROMs, kernels and other modifications. Also, the ASUS ZenFone 6 also had an active development community thanks as a result of previous device seeding efforts.

In this same light, Realme has selected a number of developers from the XDA community who will be sent devices in order to give a boost to the community and its efforts. Already, the devs who are based in India have received their Realme X while those outside India will get theirs soon. The developers are expected to contribute to efforts that would extend the product life and to give end-users valuable choices. This is also made possible by Realme’s flexibility to allow more devices to unlock their bootloaders, and efforts like these will go a long way in instilling confidence in users. A good number of OEMs are already making efforts to open up their phone’s bootloaders to developers.

The head of the year-old company revealed the info in a tweet earlier today. He said the Realme X may not necessarily launch with the same specs as the one sold in China. While he wasn’t specific about the changes, he did reveal the price will be around INR 18,000 (~$255).

That is roughly the price of the 8GB+128GB version when you convert from Chinese Renminbi to Indian Rupees. However, since the specs may be different, probably a more powerful processor and since we also don’t know the storage + RAM configuration, we can’t plainly say it is more expensive.

Another info the company head revealed is that the Indian version of the Realme X will get a third special variant in addition to the Garlic and Onion special variants already announced.

The Realme X has a 6.53inch AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It doesn’t have a notch nor a punch hole, so it has a pop-up selfie camera design. There is a Snapdragon 710 processor under the hood and up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The pop-up selfie camera is a 16MP sensor while the rear is home to a 48MP+5MP dual camera setup.
While the rumor mill continued churning out all sorts of speculations about the Realme X, the device has also been subject to multiple leaks. Backed by Oppo, this is the first such design from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

We will delve into more details about the Realme X features and top-end specifications in just a bit, but before that, we got good news for those who have restlessly been waiting to get their hands on the long-awaited device.

Three variants of the Realme X have gone up for pre-order on Giztop. The 4GB RAM+64GB ROM model carrying a $269 price tag, while the slightly larger 6GB RAM+64GB variant will set you back $299. Both models come in a punk blue color version.

Those who don’t mind shelling out $369 can go for the 8GB RAM+128GB ROM model, which also is available in punk blue color option. It is worth noting that the estimated delivery is set for the end of this month.
