The company had been planning to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/01/samsung-will-stop-making-lcd-panels-by-the-end-of-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">shut down its business for a while now</a>, with plans to end operations by year end.</p>
<figure id="attachment_339633" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-339633" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-339633 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Samsung-LCD-Plant.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Suzhou LCD Plant" width="600" height="319" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Samsung-LCD-Plant.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Samsung-LCD-Plant-300x160.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-339633" class="wp-caption-text">Samsung Suzhou LCD Plant</figcaption></figure>
<p>The reason for the delay in shutting down its LCD operations is to continue production at its L8 fab in the Asan plant for at least the next three months. According to an <a href="https://www.androidheadlines.com/2020/11/samsung-delays-the-shut-down-of-lcd-business-until-march-2021.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>AndroidHeadlines</em> </a>report, the primary reason for the delay in shut down is due to the rise in demand for LCD panels caused by the ongoing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Coronavirus</a> pandemic. With various governments enforcing work from home policies and staying indoors has become encouraged, entertainment, workloads, and more has shifted to homes.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/25/samsung-rolls-out-the-free-tv-plus-app-for-more-galaxy-phones-including-the-a-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung rolls out the free TV Plus app for more Galaxy phones including the A series</a></strong></h6>
<p>Thus, the South Korean tech giant has reportedly informed all related firms regarding its change of plans due to recent developments. For those unaware, Samsung has been producing LCD panels at its Asan Plant in its home country and its Suzhou plant in China. The company has already struck a deal with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/31/samsung-display-sells-suzhou-lcd-plant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics Technology) for the sale of its Suzhou plant</a> and has apparently also sold some equipment from its Asan plant to another Chinese firm as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-198914 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/samsung-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="600" height="337" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/samsung-logo.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/samsung-logo-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>The company is also in talks with two additional Chinese companies to sell the remaining equipment and is hoping to strike a deal by February 2021 and is hoping to shut down the LCD production by March. Samsung has been making LCDs since the early 1990s but had decided to shut production to make room for OLED panels, which have increasingly grown in popularity and demand in recent years.</p>

The companies are poised to focus on OLED panels production from next year. This development is viewed as a good one in China as it is expected to open up more opportunities for domestic companies. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-317935" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/tcl-logo-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>In a recent CCTV financial dialogue program, TCL founder and chairman Li Dongsheng aligned with this point of view. He stated that from a strategic perspective, Samsung and LG&#8217;s withdrawal from the LCD industry will bring opportunities to Chinese companies. He believes the reason for the withdrawal has to do with an adjustment to the global industry structure. In clear terms, the industry is moving away from LCD and rapidly toward the use of OLED panels. Both South Korea giants will focus more on flexible display products such as QLED and OLED technology.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/17/xiaomi-aqara-smart-home-products-amazon-us-pricing-availability">Xiaomi’s Aqara officially unveils its range of smart home products in the US</a></strong></h6>
<p>Chinese companies have already established a dominant position in LCD manufacture, especially in large-screen displays. Chinese manufacturers, including BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics (a subsidiary of TCL Holdings) and so on dominate the LCD market. Li expects this advantage to be further expanded with future development.</p>
<p>Despite their dominance in the large-display LCD industry, the Chinese firms are expected to face greater competitive pressure and challenges in small and medium screens. In the small and medium-sized field, including OLED and the next generation of new display technology, there will be stiff competition.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/lg-display.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-317934" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/lg-display.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="373" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/lg-display.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/lg-display-300x187.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/lg-display-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Samsung was once a leading force in the LCD panel market. The company established two LCD panel factories in China and two LCD production lines in South Korea. However, stiff competition in the LCD market in recent years and a drop in LCD panel prices may have prompted the tech giant&#8217;s decision to abandon the LCD panel market.</p>
