China-based SmartSens has announced a new smartphone camera sensor called the SCC62HS, signalling its ambitions in the high-resolution imaging segment. The new component is aimed at mobile devices and combines a 200-megapixel resolution with several imaging technologies designed to improve photo and video capture across different lighting conditions.

SmartSens enters the 200MP segment

SmartSens SCC62HS

The SCC62HS is the first 200-megapixel image sensor built on SmartSens’ domestic high-performance Stacked BSI platform. It uses a 55nm Stacked BSI manufacturing process and features 0.5μm pixels within a 1/1.55-inch optical format. According to the company, the sensor is designed to preserve fine details in scenes ranging from landscapes to group shots, while also keeping manufacturing costs under control for wider smartphone adoption.

The sensor incorporates technologies such as PixGain HDR, SFCPixel and AllPix ADAF. SmartSens says the combination enables higher dynamic range, reduced noise levels and faster focusing performance. The sensor supports image output at up to 200 megapixels and can capture ultra-high-resolution content while maintaining detailed image quality.

One of the headline features is PixGain HDR technology, which can deliver a dynamic range of up to 86.3dB while reducing motion-related artefacts. The sensor also supports on-chip dual-frame fusion, which helps lower processing demands on the smartphone chipset during HDR video recording and can contribute to lower power consumption. Compatibility with Staggered HDR and NDOL HDR modes adds further flexibility for different shooting scenarios.

For low-light photography, SmartSens claims a sensitivity rating of 3574mV/lux*s and a read noise level as low as 0.92e-. The company says this helps preserve image clarity and detail in darker environments. The SCC62HS also supports both AllPix ADAF and Sparse PDAF autofocus systems. The former uses full-pixel focusing for challenging lighting conditions, while the latter relies on partial phase-detection pixels to reduce power consumption during everyday use.

SmartSens has already started sampling the SCC62HS to partners, and mass production is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

The SC5A6XS brings a 50-megapixel 1-inch format and focuses on improving dynamic range and video capabilities. The announcement highlights upgrades in HDR processing, low-light imaging, and power efficiency, setting the stage for next-generation mobile photography.

Focus on HDR and video performance

SmartSens SC5A6XS

The SC5A6XS is built on a 22nm stacked process and integrates the brand’s upgraded Lofic HDR 3.0 technology. This system enhances image quality in challenging lighting by capturing a wider range of brightness levels. With a peak dynamic range of 115dB, the sensor aims to preserve highlight details while retaining shadow information in high-contrast scenes.

The HDR system works through multi-frame fusion within a single exposure, which also helps reduce motion artefacts. This is particularly useful in video scenarios where subjects or the camera are in motion. The sensor supports 4K video at 120fps, along with 4K 60fps recording in HDR mode, making it suitable for advanced video use cases on smartphones.

In terms of hardware, the sensor features a 1.6μm pixel size and incorporates SFCPixel technology to improve light sensitivity. With higher sensitivity and reduced read noise, it is designed to produce clearer images in dim conditions without excessive grain.

Autofocus is handled through a combination of full-pixel AllPix ADAF and partial pixel phase detection, allowing faster and more reliable focusing across different lighting environments. Additionally, the company has worked on reducing power consumption, with an approximate 11 percent improvement in HDR mode, which may help control device heating during extended video recording.

The SC5A6XS has already entered the sampling phase and is expected to move into mass production in the second quarter of 2026. It is likely to appear in upcoming flagship smartphones, probably the Huawei Pura 90 series, being the likely candidate, focusing heavily on camera performance.

New reports suggest that Huawei’s upcoming Mate 80 series may debut with a major camera upgrade. It is speculated that Huawei is preparing to use a domestically developed flagship-level image sensor from SmartSens in its upcoming devices. Based on the details, the sensor appears to be tailored for high-performance photography in flagship smartphones.

SmartSens SC595XS to power Mate 80’s main camera

The sensor in question is the SmartSens SC595XS, a 50-megapixel mobile CMOS image sensor with a 1/1.28-inch sensor size, which was officially unveiled last month. Built on the company’s SuperPixGain HDR technology, it achieves a wide dynamic range of up to 110dB—around 22dB higher than its predecessor on the same platform.

The sensor is designed to handle complex lighting conditions, including harsh backlighting and high-contrast scenes, effectively preserving highlight and shadow details. It also supports 4K video recording at 60fps with HDR and 120fps at standard high frame rate, giving it an edge for mobile videography.

SmartSens, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Shanghai, is a leading developer of high-performance CMOS image sensors. They design and produce chips for a wide range of applications, including surveillance, machine vision, automotive, and smartphone cameras. SmartSens offers a diverse portfolio of sensors, including high-speed options for industrial use and 5MP sensors for analog security cameras. They have consistently held the top market share in the security and surveillance sensor industry for five consecutive years. While SmartSens excels across various sensor applications, their smartphone sensors are gaining significant traction in the mobile industry.

Earlier today, the company announced the release of its latest mobile image sensor, the SC5000CS. This new back-illuminated sensor boasts a 50-megapixel resolution, a size of 1/2.5 inches, and a pixel size of 0.702μm, making it ideal for use in high-end smartphones.

High Dynamic Range and Low Noise in Photos

The SC5000CS is equipped with SmartSens’ proprietary SFCPixel-SL technology, which is designed to improve low-light performance and dynamic range. This technology uses a pixel-level dual conversion gain design to reduce read noise (RN) and fixed pattern noise (FPN). According to SmartSens, the SC5000CS has RN and FPN as low as 1.0e- and 0.2e-, respectively, significantly improving over previous-generation sensors.

In addition to its low-light performance, the SC5000CS also supports dual exposure non-overlapping HDR, and line-interleaved HDR modes. This allows the sensor to capture images with a wider dynamic range, which is essential for capturing high-quality photos in challenging lighting conditions.

Another key feature of the SC5000CS is its ability to capture 4K video at 60fps. This is made possible by the sensor’s Summing mode, which combines the output of four pixels into one. This effectively increases the pixel size to 1.404μm, which is large enough to capture high-quality video footage.

The SC5000CS incorporates SmartSens’ Sparse PDAF technology, enabling precise and fast focusing on select pixels. This ensures quick and clear image capture, especially in dynamic scenes, while reducing the power consumption of the mobile CIS.

SmartSens’ advanced design and process in reading circuit technology enable the SC5000CS to achieve lower power consumption compared to competitors. This translates to extended battery life for smartphones, a major concern for many users.

The SC5000CS is currently accepting samples and is expected to enter mass production in Q2 2024. This means that we can expect to see smartphones equipped with this sensor later this year. Earlier this month, SmartSens also introduced SC580XS, a 50-megapixel smartphone image sensor with a 1/1.28-inch optical format, offering improved low-light performance and 4K video capabilities at 120fps.

SmartSens SC580XS Key Features:

The SC580XS stands out with its 50-megapixel resolution and 1/1.28-inch optical format, a step up from the earlier 1/1.56-inch SC550XS model. It utilizes the same 22nm HKMG Stack process but with several key improvements. The sensor boasts a pixel size of 1.22µm, but in a four-in-one mode, this effectively increases to 2.44µm, which is pivotal for high-quality video recording. This feature allows the SC580XS to support 4K video at an impressive 120fps, making it ideal for advanced smartphone camera applications.

The SC580XS achieves a low readout noise of 0.7e-, which, combined with its correlated multiple sampling technology, enables a substantial reduction in noise by up to 40%. This results in clearer images, especially in low-light conditions. Compared to similar sensors in the industry, the SC580XS offers a significant reduction in both readout noise and fixed pattern noise.

The image sensor also stands out for its PixGain HDR technology, greatly enhancing the dynamic range to 120dB. This feature reduces motion artifacts, ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects. The sensor also supports multiple HDR modes, including triple exposure HDR and PixGain HDR+VS, further enhancing image quality in diverse lighting conditions.

Whether you’re capturing a fleeting moment or snapping a group selfie, fast and accurate autofocus is essential. The sensor offers enhanced focusing capabilities through AllPix ADAF and Sparse PDAF technologies, ensuring quick and accurate focusing in various lighting conditions. Additionally, the sensor prioritizes energy efficiency with improved readout circuitry and the 22nm HKMG process, allowing for extended smartphone use without excessive battery drain.
