But it’s been a few years since we got a premium device from the brand.

If you have been waiting for a flagship smartphone from Nokia, then you are in for a disappointment. HMD Global has confirmed that the company has no plans of launching a flagship or premium smartphone anytime soon.

The company has confirmed that the brand will be focusing on the core business for new, which includes entry-level and mid-range smartphones along with feature phones. It wants to offer durable devices with multi-day battery life and an affordable price tag.

This new strategy of Nokia appears to be working as the company achieved a full year of operational profitability. The company has been profitable since Q3 2020 and Q4 2021 was the most profitable quarter in its history.

Nokia 9 PureView was the last flagship smartphone launched by the company in 2019 and since then, there has been no new premium device from the brand. There were rumors about a follow-up PureView smartphone with a focus on the camera department but the device has been delayed several times and now there’s no update regarding the phone.

It appears that HMD Global has made a good choice here given that not all the brands can perform well in the premium smartphones market, especially when the market is dominated by a select few companies. Given that the major brands like BlackBerry, HTC, and to some extent Sony have bowed out of the smartphone market, sticking with what works best for Nokia seems to be a smart choice.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Cupertino based giant might be moving to adopt this ‘iPhone Strategy’ for its first automobile as well. In other words, the company might choose to work with a lesser known contract manufacturer to build its Apple Car. The news arrives after talks with established automobile brands have stalled at the moment. For the company, there are three primary options for building its car, which are either partnering with an existing car maker, build its own facilities, or teaming up with contract manufacturers like Foxconn.

For those unaware, Apple had recently been in talks with known car maker, Hyundai, and its subsidiary, for a potential deal regarding its first car. But it seems like the deal is off the table as of right now. If it had gone through, the company would likely develop an autonomous system for the vehicle, along with the exterior and interior designs and on board technology, while the automobile brand would be responsible for the final production of the car.

In simpler terms, this would effectively have Apple ask a company to make a car but remove its brand. This would be similar to the company asking its rival Samsung to make its smartphones but without its branding. Furthermore, the iPhone maker even wishes to reimagine the concept around a car and how every aspect of it is made, including the seat, its body, and other parts as well.

According to an SCMP report, the senior executive made the statement to highlight the company’s aim to sharpen its focus to ensure the survival of the brand. Ren said that the company must try to use “third class” components to manufacture “first class” products during an internal meeting, which arrives amid its struggles caused by the US trade restrictions. The Founder stated that “In the past, we have ‘spare parts’ for high-end products. But now the US has completely blocked Huawei’s access [to such components] and even commercialized products cannot be supplied to us.”

He further added that the Chinese tech giant has to “work hard to sell products and services that can be sold and [help] maintain the market position of [its]core business” in 2021. “In terms of market strategy … we must dare to abandon some countries, some customers, some products and some scenarios.” This statement is in line with Ren’s previous speech, in which he said that the company has to decentralize its operations, while also simplifying its product line and focusing on generating profit to survive the US sanctions.

Notably, Nicole Peng, vice-president of mobility at research firm Canalys stated that “It is already very challenging for Huawei to fight to survive, but the burden of developing China’s technology supply chain is way harder for a single company to bear. I believe that’s an area where Huawei wants to position itself to become one of the core pillars in China’s tech supply chain’s independence.” Similarly, Ren further added that “It will be difficult for us to rely solely on hardware to lead the world for a long time. We have to rely on software to remedy it.”

According to an SCMP report, the senior Huawei executive also called for the company to simplify its product lines, and maintain pay levels for the next three to five years to survive the US trade restrictions. The CEO and founder made the announcement in a published speech that was made public earlier this month. Ren had made the speech back in June 2020. For those unaware, the US sanctions have severely impacted the operations of the Chinese tech giant and had even led it to sell off its budget smartphone manufacturing unit, Honor.

Now, the company is doubling its efforts to expand its business in other areas, after its smartphone operations having been nearly crippled. At the moment, Huawei is working on growing its presence in areas like cloud computing/services and even smart cars. Ren stated that “There’s a big mismatch between our ability and strategy. It’s our weak link, and we are forced to start from the beginning like elementary school students.” He even referred to the Chinese proverb of “the cleverest housewife cannot cook a meal without rice”, adding that the company has neither “a clever wife” nor has its “own rice”.

The official also added that “Please don’t be upset because of the temporary US pressure, or give up on our globalization strategy. There’s no future without embracing globalization [in development and research].” Ren believes that Huawei must operate as normal and must also find ways to motivate people. He said that “hundreds of Huawei cadres” had even offered to go through a demotion, to showcase the dedication of the team.

While this sounds quite elaborate it is nearly identical to Huawei’s 2019 1+8+N strategy. The ‘1’ also stood for smartphones, while the ‘8’ and ‘N’ stood for IoT devices and smart homes and more.

In other words, the new Realme product strategy seems heavily inspired if not a direct ripoff. The company could’ve easily gone for another branding or name, but the move was quite obvious. Interestingly, a Xiaomi representative took to Twitter to call out Realme’s action, calling them a copy cat and also sharing the product strategy wheel that both companies shared, albeit with a 1 year gap.

It's called as "originality". Dear #CopyCat brand, you should try it sometime. Now even copying slides.

BTW I am surprised – why did you leave the laptop category? We just launched it. Please add that too your slide too.

Fun times ahead. #CopyCat #FakeMe pic.twitter.com/ljMD5o6mUQ

Looking at these images, even the illustrations seemed downright copied. This kind of incident isn’t exactly uncommon in the industry and direct inspirations have been seen in the past as well. But this one seems a little too lazy to say the least. To make matters worse, neither Huawei nor Realme’s product strategy is easy to say out loud, so was it even worthwhile?

He announced a strategy named “1+8+N”, in which the television has now become a part of the “8” category, for the first time. This shows how the Chinese tech giant is looking at televisions for growth in the coming years. It’s noteworthy that both Huawei and Honor are expected to launch their first Smart TV later this year.

In the company’s “1+8+N” strategy, “1” refers to the smartphones, while “8” includes PC, tablet, TV, audio, glasses, watches, locomotives, and headphones. On the other hand, “N” refers to mobile offices, smart homes, sports and health, audio-visual entertainment, and smart travel products.

Huawei had first announced its “1+8+N” strategy for the IoT products but with this new updated strategy, the company has now put on more focus towards television, smartwatches, and glasses products.

Explaining the strategy, Shao Yang, vice president of Huawei Consumer BG Strategy Marketing, had said that “1” is the device that has all control — a smartphone which is small, portable, and easy to use. Adding this to larger devices or access points represents “8”, which includes tablets and wearables to enhance your smartphone experience. Lastly, “N” is the layer where everything comes together — the network as well as the company’s IoT devices.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei P30 Pro smartphone teardown shows the company’s reliance on US sourcing for major components

As per the reports, Huawei is expected to launch two smart TV models this year. It is reported that Huawei LCD TVs with model numbers OSCA-550 and OSCA-550A have already passed the 3C Certification process. The applicant for this is Huawei Technology Co., Ltd., and the production plant is Hefei Beijing Oriental Video Technology Co., Ltd.

Huawei’s Shao Yang, vice president of Huawei Consumer BG Strategy Marketing, had said that while people see 5G, Huawei sees beyond that. He said that with HiLink and better IoT performance, security and privacy controls can and should be at fingertips.
