App sideloading, which affects both Apple and Google, has become rather popular in recent years. While Android has long accepted third-party programs and app shops, Apple is being compelled to make the shift. Certainly, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai provided testimony on the company’s alleged practice of suppressing competition by charging app developers a premium in the legal dispute with Epic Games.

Later, Sundar Pichai clarified that to safeguard consumers from viruses and jeopardise their security, Google forbids sideloading programs on Android phones. He also highlighted, pointing to Android’s bigger and foldable phone designs, how Google’s principles allow for choice and creativity.

It’s intriguing to hear Pichai discuss sideloading, which Android has always embraced as an open-source platform. It is evident from the fact that he discusses viruses while installing programs from other app shops that the business is attempting to incite fear in the public. In reality, it has only begun to use the Play Protect function to examine Android apps that are sideloaded.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns Android Users Not to Sideload Apps

Conclusion

It has been noted by many that Google will have more control over the apps that users may download. Although the business asserts that Play Store applications provide the highest level of protection for customers, a recent Kaspersky security study showed that 600 million malicious app downloads were recorded in 2023 alone from Google’s apps store.

Apple has long opposed the ability to sideload programs as it will not have any control over how or from where these apps are loaded on the iPhone, other than Pichai’s plea for safety.

The CEO is now echoing the sentiments which imply that the two digital behemoths are cognizant of the thirty per cent fee that each receives from developers who host their programmes on their own app stores. It makes sense that companies like Epic Games have chosen to host their software on a website instead of distributing it via app stores.

The CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc, Sundar Pichai has now been honoured with a Padma Bhushan Civilian Award by the Government of India. Sundar is quite famous all across the globe for his root background in India. He has been honoured with this India’s third-highest civilian award by the Government of India in San Francisco. While receiving the award, he exclaims that “India is a sole part of me and I will carry it wherever I go”.

While receiving the award from an Indian ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the CEO says also says that “I was fortunate to grow up in a family that cherished learning and knowledge, with parents who sacrificed a lot to make sure I had opportunities to explore my interests”.

Sundar Pichai was awarded with the Padma Bhushan award under the Trade and Industry category, and he was among the 17 top personnel of India who was honoured with this civilian award. “Happy to present Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, with the Padma Bhushan in San Francisco. His motivational journey from Madurai to Mountain View strengthened economic and technological relations between India and the US and reaffirmed the commitment of Indian talent to global innovation, according to a statement made on the occasion by India’s ambassador to the US.

Pichai also discussed India taking the leadership of the next G20 Summit, which would be held in India in 2023, during his discussion with the ambassador. The G20 Presidency of India, according to Pichai, “will be an extraordinary chance to establish consensus on boosting the global economy by developing an open, connected, secure, and functional internet for all.”

When asked about Google’s investments in India, Pichai noted that the company had trained over 55,000 teachers in collaboration with the government and local organisations, as well as over one million women through its WomenWill Entrepreneurship Program.

For those unaware, a recent leak of internal documents found that Google was proposing actions that would counter the strict EU rules on internet companies and even lobbying against the EU commissioner. According to a Gadgets360 report, the senior executive from Google and Breton interacted in a video conference earlier this month, which was the third conference in 2020.

This call arrived had both sides discuss a Google internal document, which defined a 60 day strategy against the European Union, who is pushing for stricter rules. The search giant planned on involving US based allies to push back against Brenton. Prior to the leak, the call had been initiated by Google, with Brenton later bringing up the leaked document during the conference to show it to Pichai.

Brenton stated in an interview that “I’m was not surprised. I’m not naive. I thought it was a bit old fashioned…,” in an interview with Anglo-American Press Association. He further added that “In any case, yes I had a discussion with Sundar… I told him what I had to tell him….he apologized. (I told him) If you need to tell me something, my door will always be open.” Apparently, Pichai apologized and also added that he had no prior knowledge of the document and it has yet to be sanctioned either.

Brenton believes that “The Internet cannot remain a ‘Wild West’: we need clear and transparent rules, a predictable environment and balanced rights and obligations.” In other words, the two had an open conversation regarding the matter, with Pichai saying that he would approach Brenton directly regarding any policy that mentions Google directly. Notably, Brenton is set to announce new draft rules known as the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act together with European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager on 2nd December 2020.
