The rumor is for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-s30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy S30</a> series, which will apparently still feature a punch hole display on the front.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-399535 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-339.png?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="914" height="198" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-339.png 914w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-339-300x65.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-339-768x166.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Screenshot-339-696x151.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 914px) 100vw, 914px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, the next gen selfie shooters in flagship handsets are expected to make a shift towards under display sensors, which are expected to be more common next year. Although, it seems like the South Korean tech giant will refrain from making this shift for a while longer. The news arrives from @数码闲聊站 who believes that the company will still ship the Galaxy S30 lineup with punch hole cameras on the front due to the maturity of the technology.</p>
<p>The tipster added that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-z-fold-3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Z Fold3</a> will be the first from the brand to feature an under display camera. However, the next gen flagship Galaxy S30 series will still feature a punch hole shooter on the front owing to the company&#8217;s maturity with this particular camera technology in its smartphones. In other words, the company might be going for the older but more reliable technology while it perfects the newer one&#8217;s implementation.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-399536 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/s_632e6e0fe9b94bd6804077e62e05d270.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="523" height="462" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/s_632e6e0fe9b94bd6804077e62e05d270.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/s_632e6e0fe9b94bd6804077e62e05d270-300x265.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/s_632e6e0fe9b94bd6804077e62e05d270-475x420.jpg 475w" sizes="(max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px" /></p>
<p>Reportedly, the punch hole shooter on the Galaxy S30 series will be housed in the top center region of the display, while its primary rear image sensor will still sport 100 megapixel camera. While some rumors had pointed at a 200 megapixel sensor on the Galaxy S30 Ultra, other reports claim that the company will offer a more refined 100 megapixel image for the upcoming flagship series. Keep in mind, this is still an unconfirmed report and it is still too early to talk about the Galaxy S30 lineup, so take this news with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-395475 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Screenshot-316.png?x10805" alt="Smartphones" width="658" height="213" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Screenshot-316.png 658w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Screenshot-316-300x97.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px" /></p>
<p>According to tipster, <a href="https://weibo.com/6048569942/KkA9qtktg?type=comment" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Digital Chat Station</em></a> on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, most top end handset from companies would still feature a punch hole display design on the front. The known tipster stated that while smartphones with under display camera technology are expected to debut sometime in the third quarter of this year, most premium devices next year would still skip this new camera technology.</p>
<p>The blogger further added that some phone makers will be the first to launch handsets with the under display cameras, but this technology still wouldn&#8217;t be widely adopted in the overall smartphone market. At the moment, certain OEM&#8217;s like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/18/xiaomi-mi-mix-4-pricing-rumors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi are working devices with under display cameras</a>. Similarly, Samsung is expected to unveil a handset with a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/15/samsung-smartphone-high-res-under-display-camera-august/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">high resolution selfie camera under the screen sometime in August</a> of this year.</p>

The technology will be in its ultra high end models and will be the first from the company.</p>
<p>Last year, the Chinese tech giant had revealed that it had reached mass production levels for its under screen camera technology, which was expected to be seen later this year. For those unaware, an under display camera is essentially a screen technology where the camera is housed under the display but is designed in a manner to allow light to permeate through a certain part of it. This makes it capable of taking images from below the screen, eliminating the need for a notch, punch hole, or even a pop up camera.</p>
<figure id="attachment_339293" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-339293" style="width: 1049px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-339293 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi 3 gen under screen camera selfie" width="1049" height="634" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM.png 1049w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-300x181.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-768x464.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-1024x619.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-696x421.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-695x420.png 695w" sizes="(max-width: 1049px) 100vw, 1049px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-339293" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi&#8217;s 3rd Gen under screen camera prototype</figcaption></figure>
<p>Furthermore, officials from the company have also stated in the past that its third generation under screen camera display will be one of the best implementations of the technology, as per an <em><a href="https://news.mydrivers.com/1/752/752791.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MyDrivers</a></em> report. Unfortunately, its still too early to know which smartphone models will features the technology. The tipster (@<a href="https://s.weibo.com/weibo/%25E6%2595%25B0%25E7%25A0%2581%25E9%2597%25B2%25E8%2581%258A%25E7%25AB%2599?topnav=1&amp;wvr=6&amp;b=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">数码闲聊站</a>) also refrained from offering any specific information so we have no way of confirming the report. But, the company is expected to launch a device with this technology in the near future so stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-369698 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/20210205105225_8047.jpg?x10805" alt="ZTE" width="446" height="670" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/20210205105225_8047.jpg 333w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/20210205105225_8047-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/20210205105225_8047-280x420.jpg 280w" sizes="(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px" /></p>
<p>While the Axon 30 is the Chinese tech giant&#8217;s next gen flagship for 2021, it was yet to be officially confirmed to feature the new camera technology. But an official announcement through the company&#8217;s official Weibo account, a Chinese microblogging website, confirmed it earlier this week. The ZTE Axon 30 series will be the flagship lineup for this year and will sport top notch specs and features.</p>
<p>At the moment, the company has yet to officially reveal any specific details regarding the premium grade handset&#8217;s hardware, but it will likely feature a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-888/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm Snapdragon 888</a> SoC. In other words, the device will not only be the first flagship series successor to feature an under screen front camera, but also the first Snapdragon 888 powered device to arrive with the new camera technology.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-368419 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ZTE-Axon-30-Pro-5G.jpg?x10805" alt="ZTE Axon 30 Pro 5G" width="680" height="383" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ZTE-Axon-30-Pro-5G.jpg 680w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ZTE-Axon-30-Pro-5G-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
<p>The company had achieved to equip this on its flagship handset by using ultra-high transparency micron-level materials, with an independently driven display chip, and an integrated circuit design. We can expect the company to offer additional improvements and tweaks to the camera technology for the successor. Although, it is still too early to provide any concrete statements regarding the matter. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-364982 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="1024" height="676" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676-768x507.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676-696x459.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-camera-display-bezel-1024x676-636x420.jpg 636w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/huawei-telefoon-display-bezel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the Chinese tech giant applied for a new patent for a smartphone that features an under screen selfie camera along with a bezel display. The company filed for the design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), with the documentation arriving with 7 product sketches and 2 color renders as well. This patent was published earlier today (12th January 2021) and details an interesting device.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/12/xiaomi-mi-10i-record-breaking-sales-200-crores-first-sale-india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G sees record breaking sales worth 200 crores INR ($27 million) during the first sale in India</a></strong></h6>
<p>Looking at the patent sketches, Huawei managed to house a thin strip display on the top bezel of the screen. The purpose of this tiny screen is to display basic information like the time, network status and signals, and all the other basic details that a conventional status bar houses. Placing all of this essential information on the top offers more screen real estate to be used for the display. In other words, playing media like videos or movies would not have this information disappear and the user can always check the time without pausing or swiping down.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-364983 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="1024" height="757" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-300x222.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-768x568.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-485x360.jpg 485w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-696x515.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/huawei-smartphone-mini-display-bezel-1024x757-568x420.jpg 568w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Another interesting detail in the Huawei patent is the lack of a front facing shooter. Furthermore, no pop up camera mechanism can be observed on the top. So, it is highly likely that the company aims to house the selfie shooter under the screen itself.  Unfortunately, finer details regarding this device are currently unknown, but the sketches also reveal the large quad camera module on the rear. At the moment, it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a device, so stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p>The new patent was filed with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which was approved and published earlier today (18th September 2020). According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/huawei-smartphone-zoom-camera/"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the patent carries 24 product images. Looking at these design sketches, the device has a curved edge display on both sides and minimal bezels. Under the display, a selfie shoot is housed, with the rear having a quad camera setup.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/18/huawei-has-hope-amd-gets-entity-list-business-license/">Huawei may have some hope as AMD gets license to sell products to companies in the Entity List</a></strong></h6>
<p>The rear camera module is housed in a very unique manner with 3 different variants of the device being patented. One has the rear camera module housed in the middle of the back panel, while the other two have it placed either at the top right or top left, respectively. The four cameras are housed in a cross shaped manner with the LED flash being in the middle. The sensor at the bottom is square shapped, indicating that its a periscopic zoom lens. The company&#8217;s branding can also be observed on the bottom.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, finer details regarding this Huawei smartphone or even its name is currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the Chinese tech giant is actually working on such a handset or whether it is just covering all bases. We might see these designs make an appearance in a Huawei smartphone in the near future, although, only an official company announcement will confirm it.</p>

<p>We already know that ZTE will soon announce the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/21/zte-axon-20-5g-the-worlds-first-under-display-camera-phone-was-in-development-for-20-months/">world&#8217;s first commercial under screen camera</a> smartphone, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-axon-20-5g/">the Axon 20 5G</a>. But Xiaomi didn&#8217;t want to miss out on the party as it decided to reveal its third generation under screen camera technology today. Not only did the company show off a working prototype with the new in display camera, but it also revealed how the technology was improved to make it as good as a traditional front camera.</p>
<p>The company developed the first generation under screen camera technology last year in June 2019. We also got to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/03/xiaomi-shares-video-under-display-selfie-camera-looks-great/">see a video of the prototype in action</a> but a closer inspection revealed that the display on top of the camera wasn&#8217;t perfect and the pixel density in that area was low.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.50.47-AM.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-339289" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.50.47-AM.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi 3 gen under screen camera" width="688" height="311" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.50.47-AM.png 688w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.50.47-AM-300x136.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px" /></a></p>
<p>Xiaomi&#8217;s CEO Lei Jun revealed that the second generation version of the under screen camera technology was developed in October 2019. And today, it has announced the third generation version of the tech, which it believes is almost perfect and comparable to a traditional selfie camera shooter.</p>
<h3><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-339352" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi Under Screen Camera Technology" width="759" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817.jpg 759w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817-696x458.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/2020082817-638x420.jpg 638w" sizes="(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px" /></a></h3>
<h3>How does Xiaomi&#8217;s Under Screen Camera Work?</h3>
<p>In a detailed post, Xiaomi explained how it achieved &#8216;near perfect&#8217; camera quality in its third generation in-display camera solution. The company revealed that the first two generations managed to make the display above the front camera transparent by sacrificing the pixel density in that area. In fact, the pixel density of the display above the camera was only half as compared to the rest of the OLED panel.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> explained that early implementation of in display cameras could only reserve 1 in 4 pixels for the display as the remaining three pixels had to be made transparent for better light transmission by changing its internal structure and material.</p>
<figure id="attachment_339287" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-339287" style="width: 620px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.37.31-AM.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-339287" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.37.31-AM.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi 3 gen under screen camera tech" width="620" height="792" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.37.31-AM.png 620w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.37.31-AM-235x300.png 235w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-8.37.31-AM-329x420.png 329w" sizes="(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-339287" class="wp-caption-text">Top &#8211; Traditional OLED display with 4 RGB subpixels<br />Middle &#8211; Early In display camera tech had only 1 RGB subpixel reserved for the display<br />Last &#8211; All four RGB pixels are lit up in the third gen technology ensuring high pixel density</figcaption></figure>
<p>However, the third generation solution solves this problem by utilizing a self developed pixel arrangement. The company has managed to achieve light transmittance through the sub-pixel gap area. Also, the company has doubled the number of pixels in both vertical and horizontal arrangement to achieve an overall pixel density similar to the rest of the display. As a result, the display area on top of the under screen camera manages to achieve a similar level of pixel density, color accuracy, color gamut, and brightness as the rest of the OLED panel.</p>
<p>The company has also improved the OLED pixel driving circuit to improve the light transmittance above the camera. Finally, Xiaomi claims that its self developed camera algorithm is capable of delivering the same image quality as traditional selfie shooters making its latest solution &#8216;almost perfect&#8217;.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">Editor&#8217;s Pick:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/07/01/visionox-under-screen-camera-ready-mass-production/">Visionox Under Screen camera display is ready for mass production</a></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Xiaomi shows off a working prototype</h3>
<p>Xiaomi is has <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/07/14/xiaomi-100w-super-charge-turbo-phone-has-entered-mass-production-could-launch-next-month/">never been shy</a> to show off its upcoming technologies. The company first revealed its prototype<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/under-screen-camera"> under screen camera</a> phone back in June 2019. More than a year later, we have a video of a working prototype using its third generation under screen camera technology.</p>
<div style="width: 696px;" class="wp-video"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');</script><![endif]-->
<video class="wp-video-shortcode" id="video-339277-1" width="696" height="392" preload="metadata" controls="controls"><source type="video/mp4" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Xiaomi-3-gen-under-screen-camera-prototype.mp4?_=1" /><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Xiaomi-3-gen-under-screen-camera-prototype.mp4">https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Xiaomi-3-gen-under-screen-camera-prototype.mp4</a></video></div>
<p>In the video shared by Lei Jun on Weibo, Xiaomi&#8217;s under screen camera prototype looks like a modified Mi 10 Ultra. The video compares the prototype with the standard Mi 10 Ultra and the increased pixel density above the camera seems to completely hide the camera below the display.</p>
<figure id="attachment_339293" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-339293" style="width: 1049px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-339293" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi 3 gen under screen camera selfie" width="1049" height="634" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM.png 1049w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-300x181.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-768x464.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-1024x619.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-696x421.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screenshot-2020-08-28-at-9.36.58-AM-695x420.png 695w" sizes="(max-width: 1049px) 100vw, 1049px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-339293" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi 3 gen under screen camera selfie</figcaption></figure>
<p>Lei Jun says that the third generation under screen camera solution is ready for mass production and should end up on smartphones by 2021.</p>

OEMs have adopted various measures to trim down the bezels around the display screen in order to give an immersive viewing experience and improve aesthetics.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-324444" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera.png?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="447" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera-300x224.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera-265x198.png 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera-485x360.png 485w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/huawei-under-screen-camera-564x420.png 564w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>One component that has made maintaining the symmetry while trimming the bezels is the front camera. OEMs have used display notch, pop-up selfie camera design and lately, punch-hole design-style to ensure the camera takes less space. But one technology which is believed to be the perfect solution is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/under-screen">under-screen</a> camera technology.</p>
<p>A number of OEMs have been reported to be working on such technology. Xiaomi was reported to have <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/07/xiaomi-patents-a-phone-with-waterfall-display-and-under-screen-camera/">patented a smartphone with an under-screen camera</a>. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/10/oppo-rd-team-details-the-development-of-under-screen-camera-technology/">OPPO</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/03/samsung-confirmed-perfect-full-screen-development/">Samsung</a> have also reportedly got the technology under development. A Chinese tipster has now hinted that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> may beat all other brands to become the first to release a smartphone using the under-screen technology.</p>
<p>Under-screen display technology involves the use of a transparent glass around the camera area which has the characteristics of low reflection and high light transmission. When not taking pictures, the screen content can be displayed normally, and when taking pictures, it becomes transparent glass, so that the light enters to realize the self-timer. The under-screen camera has to work with other hardware flawlessly and image algorithms are needed to perfect the camera experience.</p>
<p>Previous reports tipped the under-screen technology to be mass-produced in the second half of this year. This is just in time for the Mate 40 series release. The technology might find its way first on Huawei&#8217;s upcoming Mate 40 series which should drop around October.</p>
