<p>According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/exclusive-india-holds-up-wireless-approvals-china-made-devices-delaying-launches-2021-05-07/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Reuters</em> </a>report, the local government has held up approvals for import of WiFi modules from China. This has caused electronic products maker to suffer from delayed launches in the key growth market. The hold up on approvals have caused delay of even finished products as well, like Bluetooth speakers, wireless earphones, smartphones, smartwatches, and laptops, with all of these gadgets also housing WiFi modules.</p>
<p>As per sources close to the matter, the Communications Ministry&#8217;s Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing has withheld approval since November 2020. The source even added that the various firms have been lobbying in a move to receive clearance. The report noted that over 80 applications are currently impending approval, including US, Chinese, and South Korean firms that have been been waiting for approval from WPC.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-363775 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420.jpg?x23692" alt="India" width="1200" height="667" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-768x427.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-696x387.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-1068x594.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Dell-Latitude-9420-756x420.jpg 756w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, Dell, HP, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Lenovo have yet to respond to any requests for comment. This move from WPC also signifies India&#8217;s stance on Chinese imports, as the nations Prime Minister calls for greater economic self reliance. One of the source added that &#8220;the government&#8217;s idea is to push companies to manufacture these products in India. But tech companies are caught in a difficult situation &#8211; making in India would mean big-ticket investments and a long wait for returns, on the other hand the government-imposed hurdle on imports means a potential loss of revenues.&#8221;</p>

The sales have been pretty impressive especially as the company released it as a single variant. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-11-ultra">Mi 11 Ultra</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-11-pro">Mi 11 Pro</a> were only launched recently. Thus, most users who upgraded to Xiaomi&#8217;s latest flagship likely own the Mi 11. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11.jpg?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-386161" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11.jpg?x23692" alt="Xiaomi M 11" width="640" height="480" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>However, the flagship device has been plagued with a few minor issues which thankfully affected just a few users. Recently, we reported the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/04/22/xiaomi-mi-11-face-issue-burnt-motherboards/">burnt motherboards issue</a> lodged by some users in China. A new complaint is now springing up from Mi 11 users in China. Some users have complained that their WiFi module abruptly stopped working for no reason.</p>
<p>The issue apparently affects not just one but a large number of users. But there are several others who say their Mi 11 Wifi module works just fine. This is perhaps why the company is yet to say anything about the issue. The Mi 11 is one of the first models to launch with the Snapdragon 888 chipset and there have been complaints before now of excessive hotness sometimes, high power consumption, and lower battery life. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-2.png?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-386162" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-2.png?x23692" alt="Mi 11 WiFi module issue" width="670" height="762" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-2.png 670w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-2-264x300.png 264w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/mi-11-2-369x420.png 369w" sizes="(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px" /></a></p>
<p>Several reasons have been adduced by netizens as to why the issue popped up. A widely held view is that it is caused by serious flaws in the motherboard design. While some believe it is a production defect, some say the motherboard may have been affected by the overheating issue which may have soldered the WiFi module to the motherboard. However, <span class="bjh-ul"><span class="bjh-li"><span class="bjh-p">a tech geek countered this by saying that chips are soldered using a high-temperature tin with a melting point close to 300 degrees. While the CPU heats up to more than 100 degrees during extreme use, it is unlikely to cause false soldering. </span></span></span></p>
<p><span class="bjh-ul"><span class="bjh-li"><span class="bjh-p">Further, the WiFi and Bluetooth modules are integrated on the same chip and so, if this chip is burned it should affect both the WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity instead of just the WiFi. Thus, this may be a production issue affecting a certain batch of the Mi 11 and if it is really a design issue, Xiaomi may need to recall the batch.</span></span></span></p>
<p>What makes this even more interesting is reports that posts with contents relating to this issue on the official Xiaomi community have begun to be blacklisted and deleted by the moderators. There is precedence to this sort of behavior but that will definitely not kill the matter. We expect Xiaomi to come out with an official statement instead of trying to silence complainants.</p>
<p>We await an official statement from Xiaomi about this issue.</p>
