Big Plans at CD Projekt Red as New Witcher Games are on the Way

CD Projekt Red, the company behind the famous Witcher video games, is working on something big. They’re starting to make a new trilogy in the Witcher series, called “Polaris.” This news comes straight from Adam Badowski, one of the new joint CEOs of the company. They’re planning to have about 400 people working on this project by the middle of this year.

The Witcher series has been a huge hit, with more than 75 million games sold since the first one came out in 2007. But there’s no release date yet for this new game. Experts think it might come out around 2026 or 2027.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is also thinking about their next steps after “Cyberpunk 2077,” which had a lot of problems when it first came out. They’ve fixed a lot of those issues, and now more than 25 million copies have been sold. They’re even talking about making a sequel to Cyberpunk, called “Orion.” Right now, it’s just in the early planning stages.

The company is also considering adding multiplayer features to their games, but they haven’t shared many details about that yet. They’re also looking into using artificial intelligence (AI) to help make games, but they don’t think AI will take over from people.

After the tough launch of Cyberpunk, CD Projekt Red learned a lot. Badowski said they’re now better at managing how they make games. CD Projekt Red is Putting an End to the Red Engine, Focus to Shift on the Witcher Franchise

CD Projekt Red has put all its chips on the table, declaring that the future of the company lies in the upcoming “Witcher” series, codenamed Polaris. As of July’s end, a robust force of 260 developers has been dedicated to this endeavour, overshadowing the company’s previous blockbuster, Cyberpunk 2077.

The new Cyberpunk DLC might be the last to be developed on the Red Engine

Adam Kicinski, the CEO, unveiled that post the September release of “Cyberpunk 2077: Shadows of the Past,” a majority of the team will shift focus to the Witcher project. For fans hoping for more Cyberpunk expansions, Kicinski confirmed those dreams won’t materialize. The reason? A tech switchover. “It’s a technical decision, to be honest. This is the last time we’ll be developing on Red Engine for the foreseeable future,” stated Kicinski.

But here’s the twist: the Cyberpunk saga isn’t over. A sequel, currently named Project Orion, is on the horizon, albeit in early planning stages. The company has hinted that this new sequel will be developed on the Epic Unreal Engine, marking a significant change in the company’s development strategy.

So, why is this a big deal? CD Projekt Red’s commitment to shift from its in-house Red Engine to the more universally acclaimed Unreal Engine signals an intention to keep up with the rapid pace of technological evolution in the gaming industry. This could mean more realistic game worlds, smoother gameplay, and potentially faster development cycles.

CD Projekt Red officially announces development of new Witcher game

CD Projekt Red has just announced that it has began development of a new game within its popular Witcher series. The company’s last Witcher game was released back in 2015 and saw great success.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the last entry in the series, which is based on a Polish series of fantasy novels. While the first two titles also saw decent sales, this title basically thrusted the series into mainstream popularity. Notably, there is even a critically acclaimed Netflix series based on the same setting and name. Now, the studio has announced that it is working on the new game with a multi year partnership with Epic Games. This will have CD Projekt Red built a new Witcher game on the Unreal Engine 5 game engine.

For those unaware, the studio has been using its proprietary REDengine technology for its games. But with the partnership, CD Projekt Red will have access to tailor made tools and assistance from Epic Games for the latest generation of Unreal Engine. This REDengine had even powered the infamous Cyberpunk 2077 as well. The company added that this engine will continue to power 2077, with the Witcher 3 also receiving a new gen console upgrade later this year.

While the studio hasn’t shared any finer details at the moment, CD Projekt Red CTO Paweł Zawodny stated that “One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership. It is vital for CD PROJEKT RED to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as; in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release.”
