The South Korean firm had finally its top spot and that trend has also reflected in May as well with Huawei still retaining the lead.</p>
<p>At the moment, the Chinese tech giant has a market share of 19.7 percent while Samsung follows very closely behind with a 19.6 percent share in the period of May where 81.97 million smartphones were shipped. However, while Huawei still holds the title for the world&#8217;s largest smartphone maker, there is only a 0.1 percent difference. In contrast, Huawei had a 21.4 percent market share back in April, while Samsung had just 19.1 percent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-265206 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k.jpg?x42064" alt="Huawei building featured logo" width="2047" height="1356" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k.jpg 2047w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-768x509.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-696x461.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-1068x707.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-634x420.jpg 634w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/46455416431_21ff3e71cd_k-1920x1272.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2047px) 100vw, 2047px" /></p>
<p>Thus, it would seem likely that the company might not be able to retain the title for the third month in a row and that the South Korean firm will stand atop again in June. One of the contributing factors that led to Samsung closing the gap in May as its sales in the US, where smartphone sales rose by 56 percent over April. In the US, the company had a market share of 33 percent of the total of 8.4 million smartphones that were sold. <img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-329747 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/1125_1241_1243.jpg?x42064" alt="Huawei" width="600" height="477" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/1125_1241_1243.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/1125_1241_1243-300x239.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/1125_1241_1243-528x420.jpg 528w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/30/samsung-galaxy-note20-sd865-plus-camera-focusing-solved/">Samsung Galaxy Note20, powered by SD865+ SoC, has improved camera focusing ability</a></strong></h6>
<p>At the same time, it has been said that much if Huawei&#8217;s success came with its popularity in its home country, which was at the cost of its overseas business. Furthermore, the Chinese vendor&#8217;s fate for September and later this year also remains uncertain. Its upcoming flagship <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei-mate-40/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate 40</a> series is expected to launch during this period, but the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/18/tsmc-halts-new-huawei-orders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">loss of its primary HiSilcon Kirin chip supplier, TSMC</a>, might make things difficult for it.</p>
<figure id="attachment_293767" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-293767" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-293767 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/kirin.jpg?x42064" alt="Huawei" width="600" height="398" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/kirin.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/kirin-300x199.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-293767" class="wp-caption-text">Huawei&#8217;s Kirin chipsets are manufactured by TSMC</figcaption></figure>
<p>A source close to the matter also said that Samsung losing its top spot to Huawei completely was very likely if the US Sanctions hadn&#8217;t been imposed against the Chinese OEM. Although, the early reopening of the Chinese economy during the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Coronavirus</a> pandemic also helped the company regain grounds faster than its competitors.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Neil Shah, the VP of Research at Counterpoint confirmed to us in a mail that Huawei was the world’s number one smartphone maker with a 19% market share for a short period of time. The South Korean conglomerate had a market share of just 17% in the same period. </span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Huawei"><span style="font-weight: 400">Huawei</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">’s success could be attributed to the patriotic Chinese consumers who have given preference to the company’s products ever since the ban was imposed by the US government. In China, the company has been doing exceptionally well in<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/07/huawei-dominates-china-smartphone-market-in-q1-2020-idc-report/"> the past few quarters</a>. On the other hand, the lockdown in April, forced by the pandemic, severely affected sales of </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung"><span style="font-weight: 400">Samsung </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">in markets like India, the USA, Latin America, and parts of Europe. </span></p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/14/huawei-p40-pro-plus-camera-review-expanding-the-limits-of-mobile-photography/">Huawei P40 Pro Plus Camera Review: Expanding the limits of Mobile Photography</a></strong></h6>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Due to strict lockdowns, certain countries witnessed almost zero demand for smartphones. However, the Chinese economy started to recover by March 2020 and this meant that Huawei&#8217;s most important smartphone market was once again open for business.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">It&#8217;s is worth adding that Huawei is piggybacking on its home country, whereas its market share in other regions is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/03/xiaomi-grew-145-yoy-in-europe-in-q1-2020-samsung-led-the-market/">declining</a> at a higher rate due to lack of new launches and GMS (Google Mobile Services).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Huawei’s short-lived success is not guaranteed to continue for months to come as the economy around the globe is starting to recover. Consequently, Samsung&#8217;s shipments are expected to recover too.</span></p>
