Elon Musk’s company xAI has officially launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia designed to rival Wikipedia. Released as Version 0.1, Grokipedia uses xAI’s Grok AI model to automatically generate, verify, and update factual entries. Musk announced the launch on X, saying the platform is “better than Wikipedia even at 0.1” and added that Version 1.0 will be ten times better.

The first release includes about 885,279 articles created using xAI’s large-scale computing system. The homepage, titled “Grokipedia v0.1,” has a simple design with a clean layout and a single search bar for finding topics. Each entry provides concise summaries backed by listed sources and is updated continuously through the Grok model.

Unlike Wikipedia, users cannot directly edit pages. Instead, they can request corrections or updates through Grok, xAI’s conversational assistant. The assistant reviews submissions and processes approved changes automatically. Grokipedia is fully open source, meaning anyone can use or adapt its framework.

Most of the current content is adapted from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. However, some users have raised concerns about missing inline citations and transparency. Public response has been mixed. Many praised the platform’s short, neutral summaries and clean interface, while others pointed out missing context, factual gaps, and potential AI bias.

Musk said the release was delayed to “purge out the propaganda” and ensure balanced coverage. Despite small technical issues after launch, Grokipedia is seen as an early step in AI-driven knowledge platforms.

Grokipedia is available at Grokipedia.com, and users can sign in using their X accounts. There are no Android or iOS apps yet.

Musk’s AI startup xAI just introduced Grok-1.5 which apparently brings some significant improvement over the previous version.

An improved short-term memory

Grok-1.5 is now capable of processing 128k tokens which is 16 times higher than the previous version. It essentially enables the model to offer 16 times higher short-term memory and as a result, the ability to process substantially longer documents.

For those unfamiliar, in LLMs, tokens are the smallest units of data that can be processed. In the context of text, a token can be a word or a part of a word. Reportedly, the enhanced version of Grok can also deal with more complex prompts.

Grok-1.5 performs in coding and math-related problems

Grok-1.5 now also performs better coding and math-related tasks. To give an idea, Musk’s AI startup has shared some benchmark results they have tested with the new model.

“In our tests, Grok-1.5 achieved a 50.6% score on the MATH benchmark and a 90% score on the GSM8K benchmark, two math benchmarks covering a wide range of grade school to high school competition problems.” xAI added “Additionally, it scored 74.1% on the HumanEval benchmark, which evaluates code generation and problem-solving abilities.”

Grok-1.5 is built on a custom distributed training framework based on JAX, Rust, and Kubernetes. A custom training coordinator ensures that problematic nodes are automatically detected and removed from the training job. In short, they have managed to optimize their training process.

Grok is currently limited to X Premium+ subscribers. Speaking of the availability of Grok-1.5, the platform notes that early testers and existing Grok users or X Premium+ subscribers will get the opportunity ‘soon’. It’s expected to be gradually rolled out to a wider audience.

Elon Musk‘s AI startup, xAI, has released a new AI chatbot called Grok, to rival the growing popularity of Generative AI. Grok functions similarly to ChatGPT, answering questions posed by users based on information generated by a large language model.

However, it supposedly outperforms ChatGPT-3.5 in several academic tests, including math and coding.

Grok’s release comes after the success of OpenAI‘s ChatGPT, a project that Musk himself helped to found. With xAI now taking the lead, Grok is poised to not only answer user queries but also to ask its questions, inspired by the whimsical spirit of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

xAI unveils Grok

Grok is powered by a new engine called Grok-1, which has real-time access to information via the X platform. To assess its capabilities, xAI conducted a series of evaluations using standard machine learning benchmarks designed to measure math and reasoning abilities. 

Grok outperformed all other models in its compute class, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1. It was only surpassed by models that were trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and compute resources, such as GPT-4.

In addition to these benchmarks, xAI also hand-graded Grok on the 2023 Hungarian national high school finals in mathematics. Grok passed the exam with a C (59%), while Claude-2 achieved the same grade (55%), and GPT-4 got a B with 68%.

“It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” xAI said in a tweet. “Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!”

xAI said that Grok is still a very early beta product, but it is improving rapidly by the week. The company is also working on implementing more safety measures to ensure that Grok is not used maliciously.

Grok will be available on X Premium Plus for $16 per month, but it is currently only offered to a limited number of users in the United States.
