First SD 821 Phone, ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe Now on Sale

by Habeeb Onawole 10

The first  Snapdragon 821 phone, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe was announced over 2 months ago. While being the first phone manufacturer to ”announce”, we thought other manufacturers such as Samsung, LeEco or Xiaomi will beat them to releasing a Snapdragon 821 phone for sale, as ASUS is known for announcing a device but taking months to release it. But surprisingly, no one beat them to it as the Zenfone 3 deluxe is now available for purchase starting in the company’s own home country, Taiwan.

The phone costs 24,990 Taiwanese dollars which is about 5320 Yuan (roughly $800) and will be available in Glacier Silver and Shimmer Gold with the former shipping first by September 12 and the gold by September 23.

The Snapdragon 821 chip is a slight improvement over the Snapdragon 820. It has a higher clock-speed for the CPU and GPU. Qualcomm puts the improvement in performance over the SD 820 at 10%.

I’m sure that the camera will be superb but the back of the phone is so ugly…

That price is a bit obscene

It’s alot cheaper then an Apple or Samsung device in Taiwan and Mainland China. If you bought a phone with bleeding-edge specs you would be expecting 7000+ Yuan in the Mainland, so 3400 Yuan is a darn good deal tbf. It looks more expensive to us (UK, where I’m based, because the pound has dropped significantly) and the Yuan has strengthen quite a bit in the last 2 years. I used to be able to exchange roughly 10.25 Yuan per £1 but now I get about 8 Yuan per £1. The US$ mildly worse, with $1 to 6 Yuan increasing to 6.50 Yuan per $1. Yeah I used to travel alot.

It is not fair to compare with apple or samsung as they always have the most expensive price than other brands in the world

So compare to other china big brands flagships like Xiaomi, OnePlus, LeEco, etc ASUS pricing is one of the most expensive.

Lets put this in perspective under an economic perspective (not business); Asus is a Taiwanese Chinese Company. Xiaomi, Oppo, LeEco, Vivo etc. are Mainland Chinese companies. The GDP per capita of Taiwan was $22k, GDP per capita of Mainland China was ~$8k. The homemarket has always been every Asian’s main market, bar Korean smartphones (notably Samsung and LG). Xiaomi, Oppo, LeEco etc. are based in the world’s largest manufacturing hub, economies of scale comes into effect, price per Mainland Chinese smartphone is cheaper than a Taiwanese Chinese smartphone. Also note, Mainland China’s tax rate is 25% or 15% dependent on Government-approval (e.g. Home-based companies), Taiwan is 17% flat-rate, yes Asus wants to make a profit, no doubt but they probably have more costs too. This is a very basic reply, I could give you a full economic and business analysis of Asus’ decision for their product pricing, but I don’t have as much time to burn 😀

They’re all getting out of hand now. Note 7 has breached decent 55″ led tv prices. take apart the TV and Phone side by side and look at what you’re getting for 800.00us
