The first units of the new Galaxy Fold were released by Samsung on Monday. Some of the units were handed out to a number of tech reviewers. This was received with lots of enthusiasm as reviews were already streaming out and it shows the device will soon be available to buy. Unfortunately, by Wednesday, the Galaxy Fold had a nightmarish experience in the hands of some of the reviewers.  The display on some of the units got damaged and couldn’t be used anymore. Even though the number of reported cases were no more than five, the news soon spread like wildfire. The reasons are not difficult to decipher. For one, the Galaxy Fold was a first-generation technology, delivering on the foldable phone design we had so anticipated. Secondly, the device costs almost $2000! Who wants to spend that much on a device that can’t even last a week in the hands of users.Samsung Galaxy Fold Display Issue

Samsung did not hesitate to respond to the issue. A statement released to The Verge by the Korean tech giant reads, “A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers”.

We expect some improvement to be made to the final products. BHowever, it remains unconvincing that the display can withstand the rigours of daily use. It looks just too fragile. Perhaps. in a couple of years time, the technology could see some improvements to increase the durability would be made.
