Google announced the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL yesterday on Day 1 of this year’s edition of Google I/O. Both devices are the cheapest smartphones Google has released ever since it ditched the Nexus line in favor of the Pixel line a few years ago. The good news is they won’t be the last.

Pixel 3a

According to a report by Android Police, the Pixel 3a smartphones are not “one-off” devices. Google’s plan is to continue releasing affordable versions of its Pixel smartphones for the “foreseeable future”.

There is no confirmation yet that these future devices will get the “a” suffix (Pixel 4a, Pixel 5a) but they will happen. The move is also a win for Google in a way. Rather than wait a whole year before the launch of the next Pixel phone, the tech giant will have two main phone launches each year, keeping them in the news.

However, there are concerns the decision to release affordable versions of the flagship will affect the sales of the main devices. Since the affordable versions will most likely have some of the key features of the main flagships, folks may decide to settle for them instead. Nevertheless, Google might not be bothered as long as its phones are selling. We also presume, the differences between both phones may widen but Google will design the Pixel 3a’s successor in such a way that it will still the best in its class.
