A report by IPlytics,  an authorized patent data firm, shows that Chinese tech companies lead in worldwide 5G patent applications with Huawei in the first position. Chinese tech giant Huawei played a major role, laying claim to 15 percent of Standards-Essential Patents, according to the report. Standards-Essential Patents (5G SEPs) are mandatory patents any company will have to use when implementing standardized 5G technology licenses. Three the giants from China made it into the top 10 5G SEPs patents with Huawei leading the entire pack. Fellow Chinese firms ZET Corp and China Academy of Telecommunications Technology clinched the fifth and ninth spots, respectively. Another Chinese firm on the list is the Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunication Corp with 207 5G SEPs.

The next big thing in the tech industry is, no doubt, 5G technology. The race has been on between China and the U.S on who will be the first to roll out the technology. From the look of things, China has the upper hand and was billed to officially roll out its 5G network in Q1 2019. However, the technology is still being tested in both countries.
