HMD Global, the Finnish company which now makes Nokia branded smartphones, has done a pretty good job of reviving the Nokia brand. This is impressive given that it did so when the smartphone market is overcrowded and is fiercely competitive.

However, there’s one thing that the company failed to foresee is how confusing its smartphone naming scheme could become. As far as the naming of the Nokia smartphones goes, the company doesn’t seem to have a clear system and is creating confusion among the customers.

Now, HMD Global‘s General Manager Pranav Shroff has also admitted about the poor naming scheme for the Nokia smartphones during an interview with Gadgets 360. He said, “We owe it to our consumers — and generally everybody — to make sure [our product portfolio is] clear. If we have not made that clear, and I agree that we haven’t, then that is something we need to work on better.”

For instance, the Nokia 7.1, which is supposed to be a follow-up to the Nokia 7 Plus, isn’t actually a newer, upgraded version of the Nokia 7 Plus. This leads one to wonder what “Plus” even means. Another example if the Nokia 1 Plus, which isn’t a good choice when there’s a popular smartphone brand named OnePlus.

However, it seems that the company is learning from its mistakes and has plans to come up with a solution. Pranav Shroff said that “We have a job to do there if we haven’t done it well enough, which I can see. So yes, the strategy [for the future] is to make sure to bring the simplicity that we always wanted to have.”

He clarified that the company now intends to cut back on the “Plus” models if not get rid of them, and will also bring back the simplicity and clarity to the naming scheme.

During this interview, he also talked about launching the Nokia 9 PureView, the company’s current flagship smartphone with five rear camera sensors, in the Indian market. While the phone’s launch has been teased a few times by the company, the exact launch date is not yet known.
