Huawei announced its first foldable phone – the Mate X at MWC 2019 in February. The device is preferred by most fans to the Galaxy Fold as it is seen as a true reflection of what is seen as a foldable phone. The Mate X adopts an out-folding design which ensures it is the same screen when folded that is in use when it is opened. Since the unveiling, expectations have run out as to the release of the phone. The device was earlier tipped to be released this June but a recent rumour says the Mate X will drop in December. The price of the Mate X is now rumoured to be higher than what was expected. Previously, there were speculations that the Mate X will be priced around 12,999 yuan (~$1898). However, the latest news from China indicates that the phone could go for as high as 14,999 yuan (~$2191). For the global market, the price may even reach 17,000 yuan ($2,483), according to rumours.

The Mate X may still be a scarce product to come by even with the huge price tag. This is because the production process is slow, mainly due to the low yield of the foldable display panels. Initial stocking by Huawei for the first sale in China will be around 100,000 units. Considering the attention the phone courts, if this is true, the phone will be sold out in a flash.

By the way, the Mate X is also Huawei’s first 5G phone. So, the interest isn’t just for the foldable design but for the 5G connectivity it offers.
