While talking at the event, he said that Honor does not want to release a traditional TV. Instead, it wants to accelerate the evolution of the TV industry with the help of innovation.  He revealed that Honor’s new smart screen will be powered by Honghu 818 chipset, developed by Huawei’s Hisilicon in partnership with Baidu. This is different from the Kirin lineup that powers Huawei and Honor smartphones and looks to be optimized specifically for smart screen products. The Honghu 818’s computing power and decoding capability will ensure that Honor’s new smart screen offers excellent picture and sound quality.

Honghu 818 chip

Baidu had announced the Honghu chip earlier this month targeted at AI devices including smart home products. But this is the first time we are hearing about the new Honghu 818 chip from the lineup. The new chipset supports HDR, super-resolution (SR), noise-reduction (NR), dynamic contrast improvement (DCI), automatic color management (ACM) and motion estimation motion compensation (MEMC) technologies to offer a high-end video experience.

It also integrates Huawei’s Histen sound quality optimization technology that’s found on its smartphones as well. The Honghu 818 also supports 8K@30fps and 4K@120fps video decoding and up to 64MP image decoding.

The Honor smart screen features a pop-up camera as well! The camera is likely going be used to capture pictures and make video calls. However, what makes it even more interesting is that it supports facial recognition, which could be one of the way to secure the device.

Finally, Zhao revealed that the new Honor smart screen is already up for reservations on platforms such as JD.com. In fact, a quick look at JongDong’s reservation page reveals that the Honor smart screen will have two versions, a standard variant and a Pro variant. Both the smart screens are of 55-inches.

Overall, from the new details revealed by Zhao, we can say that the Honor smart screen will be a pop-up camera-equipped 55-inch smart display that will be more than a regular TV. Apart from the powerful entertainment-oriented features, Zhao says that there are several other features worth looking forward to.

It’s likely that Huawei’s HongMeng OS powers this new device, but we haven’t got a confirmation yet. Given that the official launch is just a few days away, we expect a lot more details in the coming days!
