Motorola has reportedly started pushing Android Pie update to the Moto Z2 Play. This is coming more than a year after Android Pie was released and the Pie has even got a successor which has started rolling out for over a month running now.  Several members of the XDA community have reported getting OTA updates for Android Pie.

The update may be coming quite late but it is better late than never. Android Pie brings several features that aren’t available on phones running Android Oreo. The Moto Z2 Play is the midrange version of the Moto Z2 and was released in 2017 running Android Nougat. It got updated to Android Oreo last year. This update may be the last that Motorola will push to the model.

Since after Motorola was sold by Google to Lenovo, software update doesn’t seem to be a priority. We the company was still owned by Google, Android updates were faster. We can recall Motorola phones usually get updates around the same time as Google’s Nexus phones. In some cases, the Motorola devices even got it even faster, like the original Moto X which got Android 4.4 KitKat before the Nexus 4.

As with the Oreo update for the Moto Z2 Play which first rolled out in Brazil, Z2 Play users in Brazil have started receiving the update. We expect the OTA to be pushed to Z2 Play users in other regions.
