Alongside the Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Kids Edition, Amazon also announced a Kindle Kids Edition. The new Kindle is practically the 10th gen kindle with a year of FreeTime Unlimited for books aimed at kids and colorful cases designed to make the device appealing to kids.

Kindle Kids Edition

The new device is expected to get kids to read rather than stare at the screen of their Fire 7 Kids Edition or Fire HD 10 Kids Edition. Since this is just for reading, there are no interruptions from apps, games, and videos.

With 1-year of FreeTime Unlimited which allows for up to four child profiles, kids will be able to access popular titles such as The Harry Potter series, Chronicles of Narnia, Artemis Fowl (which has a movie on the way), and The Boxcar Children.

Amazon says that those who already have a prepaid Freetime Unlimited subscription not included with a device or who are a monthly FreeTime Unlimited subscriber will have their active subscription canceled and will receive a pro-rata refund for the remaining period while their new 1-year free subscription will begin.

Parents will be able to set educational goals, monitor their kid’s reading progress for each book, and track achievements for each day on their phone. The Kindle has a Vocabulary Builder that will use words looked up in the built-in dictionary to create flashcards for kids to learn definitions and usage of words. There is also Word Wise which automatically shows short and simple definitions above difficult words so that the child can keep reading with fewer interruptions.

The Kindle Kids Editon has a 2-year worry-free guarantee which means Amazon will replace it if anything happens to it within that period.

Kindle Kids Edition covers

The device has a 6” screen, 8GB of built-in storage for over a thousand books, and a battery life of up to 4 weeks on a single charge (30 minutes per day, wireless and Bluetooth off, and brightness set to 13). It will charge fully in 4 hours using a 5W charger. Audible AudioBook streaming over Bluetooth isn’t available but is said to be coming soon.

The Kindle itself is black but there are four (blue, pink, rainbow birds, and space station) covers you can choose. The Kindle Kids Edition is priced at $109.99 and will be released on October 30.
