Chinese smartphone maker, Oppo is gearing to expand its reach to Hong-Kong where it plans to sell its offerings via select offline retailers. Noteworthy, the region is currently going observing anti-government protests by locals who have directed their anger on mainland Chinese companies by vandalising their stores.

According to locals that are familiar with the mattery, the first smartphone that Oppo plans to launch in Hong-Kong is the mid-range Reno 2 which made its official debut last month. Oppo is currently the fifth-largest smartphone vendor in the world and third largest in its home country, China. However, overall sales of handsets in the country are currently seeing a downshift and Hong-Kong launch could possibly make up for some of that loss.

Surprisingly, Oppo is the only mainland Chinese smartphone OEM to remain absent from Hong-Kong until. Offering from brands like Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo are already available for purchase via both online and offline channels in the territory. While an Oppo spokeswoman declined to comment on its expansion plans, local sources claim the launch of the first Oppo device could happen this very week.

Talking about vandalism caused by locals, a Xiaomi exclusive outlet was set on fire by protesters last week which suffered serious damage. Besides, Huawei’s stand-alone store in a shopping mall has also been attacked by these protesters in the recent past.

As previously mentioned, Oppo has partnered with select offline retail stores owned and run by locals, therefore, the chances of vandalism on these locations are presumed to be minimised greatly.
