MediaTek is betting big on 5G to make a solid comeback into the smartphone industry. And according to a new report from Taiwan, MediaTek will be shipping its mid-range 5G chip to Huawei next year. This will be the second 5G chip from the company, code-named MT6873, targeted at the affordable segment of the smartphone market.

MediaTek 5G SoC Featured

For the past couple of years, MediaTek has focused on developing products for 5G technology. And as 5G networks have started to roll out across the globe, the company is back into the limelight. The company’s flagship-grade 5G chipset, codenamed MT6885Z, will be officially announced on November 26. While that’ll power the expensive 5G handsets in the market in the coming months, the MT6873 chipset is really the chip we should be excited about.

MT6873 will be targeted at the mid-range smartphone market and should end up on phones around $300. We still haven’t seen any affordable 5G mid-range smartphones in the market but by Q2 2020, things are expected to change. This chip is said to power Huawei’s mid-range smartphones and we could see it inside one or two Honor 5G devices too.

Huawei’s high-end Kirin 990 5G will power its flagship models, which opens up the spot for mid-range and low-end devices. In the past couple of years, Qualcomm has traditionally supplied some chips for Huawei and Honor’s mid-rangers. However, with MT6873’s entry, MediaTek could grab a small share of those shipments next year.

MediaTek is also reportedly developing a third 5G chip for the smartphone market, targeted at a more affordable price segment. The chip should power smartphones that cost around $250.
