According to a new report from IHS Markit, Samsung accounted for about 29 percent of total smartphone display shipments in the third quarter of this year. In comparison, in Q2 2019 it only had a 21.3 percent market share. The sizeable jump in sales numbers has propelled Samsung to the top spot again beating out BOE displays for the first time since Q4 of 2018.

Samsung’s active matrix organic light emitting displays (or AMOLED) is becoming increasingly more popular with other smartphone manufacturers. David Hseih, Senior Director from IHS Markit also stated that more and more companies are quickly adopting the AMOLED technology for their mid to even high-end smartphone offerings. Many major brands including Apple, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and even Xiaomi have used AMOLED technology in their high-end models in 2019. Being the most seasoned and well-known supplier of AMOLED displays, the company has seen AMOLED shipments totaling 146 million units in Q3, up from 93 million from Q2 2019.

Notably, this also marked the first time AMOLED shipments had surpassed LTPS TFT LCD shipments (144 million). Hence, it implies the AMOLED demand in the market will only further increase and Samsung will be well utilizing this opportunity. Furthermore, other Chinese companies like BOE, Visionox, ChinaStar, Tianma, and EverDislpay will also seek to gain with their AMOLED offerings but will be nowhere near the South Korean veteran.
