The smartphone industry has already been confirmed to be heading to an era driven by 5G. As a matter of fact, 2020 is predicted to be the year of 5G smartphones with almost all OEMs expected to release at least a 5G phone. A recent chart attributed to being from Counterpoint Research has predicted how the various OEMs are expected to rank in terms of 5G phone shipments.

The chart projects that Huawei and its Honor brand with combine to give Huawei the lead in the 5G smartphone sales. Huawei is expected to be followed by Apple which is expected to release its first 5G phone next year. Samsung is expected to come in at the third place with more 5G phones expected from the Korean tech giant this year. Samsung is also expected to release 5G mid-range models aside from its flagship lineup.

BBK subsidiaries OPPO and Vivo complete the top 5 rankings while Xiaomi is expected to come in at number 6 position. LG, OnePlus, Google and Motorola are expected to grab a substantial share of the 5G market to complete the top 10 rankings.

Counterpoint projects that the global 5G smartphone shipments in 2020 will exceed 270 million units. The research firm also says the penetration rate of 5G mobile phones will increase from about 1% in 2019 to more than 15% in 2020.
