India has joined the list of countries that have given embattled Chinese tech company Huawei the green light to participate in 5G trials. This decision will see the Chinese giant help the world’s second-largest internet market build its 5G network.Huawei store logo official featured 03

This was disclosed by Ravi Shankar Prasad, the country’s minister for technology at an event in New Delhi. “We have taken a decision to give 5G [bandwidth] for trial to all the players,” he said.

This news comes as a welcome reprieve for Huawei who is facing severe sanctions from the US government. The US has urged allies to shun Huawei’s 5G infrastructure citing security concern. The US government says China could use Huawei products to spy on other nations. Huawei is presently the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker and a leading smartphone brand and was in a good position to clinch a majority of the world’s 5G equipment contract before the US debacle began. The leading smartphone maker has consistently insisted that it has no link with Beijing and that its products don’t pose a national security risk.

This is coming just days after Britain’s security chiefs reportedly gave Prime Minister Boris Johnson the nod to allow Huawei provide non-core 5G equipment. Earlier this month, one of Germany’s biggest mobile carriers announced that it would use the Chinese company’s equipment in its 5G networks. India’s 5G trials are expected to begin in January 2020.
