Oppo, the popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has apparently made India’s first 5G WhatsApp call. The company recently revealed this achievement, which was made in its research and development centre in Hyderabad, India.
Oppo made the WhatsApp video call to test the capabilities like network speeds and bands through 5G. In a press release, Tasleem Arif (Vice President of R&D for Oppo India), stated that “The 5G WhatsApp video calling tests which we have conducted at our R&D center in Hyderabad has further strengthened our vision to be future-ready for 5G rollout.”
In other words, the company is already preparing for the eventual adoption of the newer and faster bandwidth in the world’s second largest smartphone market. This move is also indicative of Oppo’s commitment to “bringing technology to empower and simplify the lives of the consumers.” Or simply put, innovating and offering the latest technology that is currently commercially available.

Notably, the test also showcases that 5G networking in India is closer than you think it is. Smartphone brands testing the new telecommunications technology is only indicative of how quickly the shift could arrive. Oppo is just one of the many OEMs working on developing 5G handsets for India. On the other hand, brands like Realme and iQOO have already launched 5G enabled handsets in the Southeast Asian country.
Oppo may soon join them with the Oppo Find X2, which is expected to make a global debut soon. It is also expected to arrive in India and will likely be the same 5G flagship that the company ships to countries that already have 5G networking, like China and South Korea. So stay tuned for the launch event and further developments on 5G in India.
