Xiaomi had just launched its flagship Mi 10 series a few weeks prior. The smartphone arrived with top notch specs and features, including the new LPDDR5 memory. Recently, this has been the staple in recent premium smartphone releases. And now, a poll from a Redmi senior official reveals that the newer memory generation might be a popular choice for the company’s upcoming flagship, Redmi K30 Pro.

Lu Weibing, General Manager of Redmi, had previously conducted a poll online on the Chinese microblogging website, Weibo. In the poll, the senior executive asked Weibo users to choose between the 12GB of LPDR4X RAM or 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM for the same price. The same price is important considering the memory offering is more generous in the last generation in comparison to the newer one.

So is 8GB of LPDDR5 really better than 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM? Well, the answer requires a bit of explanation. While the higher memory offering is great positive and may have uses in certain scenarios and future proof one’s smartphone, the newer generations arrive with improvements to overall performance and efficiency.

The LPDDR5 memory has a transmission rate of 6.4Gbps, which is almost twice as fast as LPDDR4 and more than 20% faster than LPDDR4X. In terms of power efficiency, the newer generation consumer lesser power whilst offering faster performance. So, the performance value the new generation provides is a more viable option instead of just raw memory size.

In the poll, a majority of the users chose the LPDDR5 RAM, considering it is also one of the latest trends on premium flagships. In the poll, nearly 75% of the votes were for the 8GB of LPPRD5 RAM in comparison to just 25% for the 12GB of LPDDR4X memory. 61,000 votes on the former and 20,000 votes on the latter to be precise. So, the Redmi K30 Pro is likely to feature the LPDDR5 memory.
