Sony had issued an announcement earlier today (27th March 2020) that mentioned the effects of the recent coronavirus outbreak on its certain businesses. In the official statement, the company said that its proprietary CMOS image sensor’s production is currently not severely affected at the moment. The announcement was made on the company’s official Weibo, a Chinese microbloggin website, account.
According to Sony, the viral pandemic had initially caused the shut down of four different manufacturing plants in China, all of which have already resumed operations last month on 10th February 2020. Similarly, the Japanese tech giant also mentioned that the company’s factories in the United Kingdom and Malaysia have also been affected by the outbreak as well.

However, despite all of the halts in production, Sony said its CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) image sensors production has not been severely impacted. In other words, the material supply has been mostly unscathed, including the raw materials that are processor for the production of its proprietary camera sensors.
For those unaware, Sony is one of the world’s leading figures in imaging technology and camera sensors. Market research and analysis have revealed that the company shares 48 percent of the total image sensor market. On the other hand, Samsung, the South Korean tech giant only has a market share of 21 percent.
