Since the OnePlus 7 series, the company has decided to move over to the higher refresh rate panel standards for its annual flagship series. This holds true even now for the OnePus 8 series as it is confirmed to arrive with a 120Hz display as well. Now, Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, has explained the new MEMC technology on the device and also revealed the apps that will support the new system.

The OnePlus 8 series, as stated above, will feature a high refresh rate and take advantage of this, it will also arrive with MEMC technology (Motion Estimation And Motion Compensation). This technology enables the smoothening of visual content which was not natively captured in such a high frame rate to be displayed in a manner that fits the high refresh rate of the display. As a rough example, a movie that is generally shot in 21-24fps can now be watched at a higher 120Hz refresh rate.

OnePlus achieves this by housing a dedicated chip alongside an exclusive algorithm to bring about it calls a “high frame ecology.” This includes both games, movies and even online streaming applications that can now be consumed at smoother frame rates. The new MEMC technology from the company has been labeled as High Frame 2.0, and has been included to solve the problem of high refresh rate screens on smartphones not having any high refresh rate content to be displayed.

Apps that will support the new MEMC Technology

The apps that will support this new feature include YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, VLC, MX Player, and even its proprietary Gallery application. Similarly, other known Chinese multi media apps are also supported while various gaming titles are also a big inclusion. It is generally known that gaming at higher refresh rates lowers latency and improves the players’ overall gaming performance as well.
