Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this year as the company’s second commercially available foldable smartphone after the Galaxy Fold. According to the latest report by DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), this handset has been the best-selling foldable device in 2020 so far.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip is a clamshell foldable phone. But it is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset even though it launched this year alongside the Galaxy S20 series.

However, the flexible AMOLED panel on this handset is well protected with a layer of UTG (Ultra Thin Glass). This makes it more durable than the first foldable device from Samsung that uses CPI (Colorless Polyimide). Also, it launched at a slightly lower price tag of $1,380, compared to the former’s $1,980.

All these factors, in addition to several discounts from time to time, make it more attractive to customers than the Galaxy Fold. This is why it is selling much better than the previous device.

That said, SCHOTT, the manufacturer of this UTG film is the bigger winner according to Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst at DSCC. The same material will also be used on the display of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Anyway, it won’t continue to lead the market, as Corning is also expected to manufacture and ship UTG to Apple in the near future. Until then, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 2 will compete with each other in 2021.
