Earlier this week, TSMC unveiled a new roadmap for the next two years in its annual conference. In this event, the world’s largest contract chipmaker shared some interesting things, like working on setting up a new foundry for 2nm chip, according to a GSMArena report.

TSMC has already started work on its 2nm foundry and is already building a new factory and research and development center. The company will employ around 8,000 people to help achieve the evolution from 3nm chips that are expected to arrive in the consumer market by the end of 2022. Notably, YP Chin, the company’s senior VP confirmed that TSMC has already purchased land in Hsinchu to expand its research and development center.

Furthermore, the 2nm process node will be developed on the GAA (gate all around) technology rather than its FinFET solution, which is being used for the 3nm fab. The technology is the next step in the semiconductor industry. Similarly, Samsung has already announced plans on using GAA for its 3nm process technology by 2022. So, TSMC entering the race is a good sign of competition in the next generation of chip manufacturing.
