The iPad is the most popular tablet right now. With new models in form of the iPad Air 2020 and 8th-gen iPad announced a few days ago, Apple should cement its lead and maybe even grow its share of the tablet market.

iPad sales
Apple has sold half a billion iPads since 2010

At the Apple event on Tuesday, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, revealed that they have sold 500 million iPads since the first model was released in 2010. Why is this news important? It is because Apple announced back in 2018 that it will no longer reveal the unit sales for its devices anymore. Prior to the announcement, Apple used to disclose the number of sales in its quarterly earnings report.

Apple’s current iPad lineup includes the 8th gen iPad which starts at $329, the iPad mini with a starting price of $399, the new iPad Air that starts at $599, and the top of the line iPad Pro with a starting price of $799.

Last year, Apple announced iPadOS, a mobile operating system designed for its tablets. Before the announcement, the iPad lineup ran iOS just like the iPhones. The new operating system takes advantage of the large screen of the iPads with new multitasking features, a desktop version of Safari, and also allows the tablet to double as a second display for Apple’s iMacs and MacBooks.
