Google Play Services for AR allows compatible devices to use apps built on the ARCore SDK. This means if your phone supports the service, you can use features such as the measure app which allows you to use your phone as a tape rule to measure dimensions or Live View in Google Maps.
Devices don’t usually have support for Google Play Services for AR out of the box. So it is no surprise that there are periodic announcements of the phones that now support the services.
