Xiaomi‘s Mi Developers Conference (MiDC) is presently ongoing and the innovative tech giant has unveiled a number of new technologies. Camera technology seems to be the focus as the company announced a new camera team. Xiaomi also announced a new telescopic camera developed by the brand’s research and development team.
The camera technology features a retractable design with the periscopic lens capable of achieving a 300% increase in light input and a 20% increase in clarity. According to Zeng Xuezhong, vice president of Xiaomi Group and president of the mobile phone department, this is Xiaomi taking inspiration from traditional cameras and independently developing new retractable lens technology. The new lens is said to have two major advantages. One is a large aperture, which increases the amount of light received by 300%, which can bring better night scene photography effects.
Secondly, the camera comes with a new anti-shake technology which offers better image stability. Thus, the sharpness of the image is increased by 20% and you get to capture a clear shot that isn’t affected even if the hand shakes while trying to take a shot. 
From the demo videos shared by a Weibo user @Xiao1u, the telescopic lens will retract into the phone when not taking pictures, and will automatically extend when taking pictures, the whole process responds very quickly.
Xiaomi has not announced when the technology will be released, and it is not clear which mobile phone will be the first to utilise the mechanism but this mechanical structure will have new problems to be solved, and it should take a long time to complete.
