There have been reports that Nintendo is planning to announce a new Switch console with better specs and features. While reports say the console won’t arrive until next year, Nintendo surprised us today when it announced a new Switch console that’s a slight refresh of the current version.

Nintendo Switch (OLED Model)

The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) as it is officially called has a bigger screen that is OLED, double the storage, and upgrades in the design of the console itself and the dock. It also costs more.

The display has been bumped up to 7.0-inches in size but the resolution is still 720p. The kickstand, which was one of the complaints of the original console now has a wide adjustable angle Nintendo also claims the audio has been enhanced. Another key upgrade is the storage which has been increased from 32GB on the other Switch consoles to 64GB.

The Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will work in handheld mode, tabletop mode, and TV mode. The dock has also been upgraded with a LAN port, providing users with an alternative to Wi-Fi. The battery life is unchanged at between 4.5 to 9 hours.

With respect to dimensions, the new Switch console is the same height (4”) as the original but it is slightly longer at 9.5”. It also weighs a bit more at 421.8 grams. The console comes in white with a matching dock.

Nintendo says the Switch (OLED Model) will sell for $349.99 and will be available for purchase on October 8.
