Earlier this week, TSMC confirmed that it is planning on building its first chip production plant in Japan to expand overseas manufacturing while its site in Arizona is expected to start mass production in the first quarter of 2024.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the world’s largest contract chipmaker is currently working on determining the feasibility of the chip facility in Japan. For those unaware, we had previously reported on rumors/reports (1,2) of the company eyeing plans for a chip plant in the region. Now, the news has been officially confirmed with the TSMC Chairman Mark Liu stating that “We are in the due diligence process now to have a specialty technology fab in Japan. It is still early to disclose the decision because it will be based on our customer needs, operating efficiency evaluation, and cost economics.”
Furthermore, Liu also confirmed that the 12 billion US Dollars factory that it is building in Arizona, US, will begin mass production in 2024. Its operations will start sometime in the first quarter of 2024 and its first batch of engineers hired in the US to staff this facility have also arrived in Taiwan back in April for training. Mark Liu added that “We will continue to compress our schedule as much as we can.”

This facility will be capable of producing semiconductors based on the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s 5nm process. This advanced process has been featured in various consumer electronics products like smartphones and more. A notable example being Apple and its A14 Bionic chip for its iPhone 12 series.
