According to a Counterpoint Research report, the region’s smartphone market saw a strong growth in Q2 2021 owing to strong promotions amid a growth in consumer demand as the economy recovers. Furthermore, the boom in middle class has also pushed the younger demographic’s demand for smartphones. So, despite the rising coronavirus cases in the country, the demand still remained strong, with the local lockdowns further reinforcing the demand as well.

Realme lead the smartphone market in Q2 2021, with a 21 percent market share. It achieved the lead with Oppo arriving a close second with a 20 percent market share. Meanwhile, Samsung (19 percent) and Vivo (18 percent) came in third and fourth respectively, while Xiaomi rounded up the top 5 list with a 9 percent market share. The Chinese smartphone maker managed to lead the market thanks to the strong performance of its Realme 8 series but primarily due to the popularity of its C series of smartphones.

Research Associate Debasish Jana added that “The Philippines smartphone market continues to grow as consumers are rapidly shifting to the smartphone. Besides OEMs promoting the smartphone ecosystem, the telecom operators are also encouraging consumers to adopt 4G and 5G, leading to more people buying smartphones to avail better connectivity. Online channels are increasingly playing a crucial role in the smartphone market growth. They became more significant during the COVID-19 restrictions when offline retail could not operate at normal capacity.”
