Last year, ZTE became the first brand to launch a phone with under-display camera by announcing the ZTE Axon 20 5G. This year, mainstream brands like Samsung and Xiaomi launched under-display camera phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 4. Fresh information suggests that Realme could be planning to launch a smartphone with an in-screen camera in 2022.

As per a report by The Mobile Hunt, Realme has seemingly filed a patent for a phone with an in-screen camera. The patent documents showcase a phone with a full-screen design, which suggests its selfie camera could be embedded under the display. It also seems to be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

As can be seen in the patent images, the left edge of the phone has volume buttons, and its right side features a power key. The back panel of the device has a triple camera unit. Its top edge appears to be barren, whereas its bottom edge has a USB-C port and a SIM card slot. Some antenna lines can be seen on the top and bottom frames of the device. It does not feature a 3.5mm audio jack.

Back in September, Realme China CMO Xu Qi shared an image of a phone without a notch or punch-hole through a Weibo post. He had mentioned in the comments of the post that it does not feature a pop-up camera system. Probably, he may have teased a prototype of a Realme phone with an in-screen camera.

Realme prototype under-display camera

It is very likely that many smartphone OEMs may launch smartphones with under-display camera in 2022. Hence, it is likely that Realme may launch its first in-screen camera phone in the coming year.
