Despite Amazon and Roku still dominating the smart TV segment, Google’s Android TVs are also gaining popularity. It is estimated that the platform has already crossed the 100 million total users milestone last year.
The news arrives from a Google spokesperson who shared this information with 9to5Google. The spokesperson confirmed some new figures related to the Android TV OS. As of right now, the platform along with Google TV run on more than 110 million monthly active devices combined. In other words, it marks a significant growth in terms of popularity and userbase. Back in May 2021, the search engine giant had reported on just 80 million active devices running on its platform.
This means that over 30 million new devices have been added to this figure since that month. According to the report, a majority of the growth is from the Chromecast with Google TV, as well as TCL‘s Android TV OS models. Furthermore, Google also attributed the strong growth to its various partners, which now number over 250 across the globe. This includes more a 170 pay TV operator partners.
Notably, the company had also announced the latest Android TV 12 operating system back in December 2021. Although, it has yet to be released for commercial devices at the moment. Regardless, brands like TCL, Sony, and Hisense all launched new Google TV models during the CES 2022 event. So, its well on its way to become a major rival to the likes of both Amazon and Roku.
