Xiaomi on Friday appointed former BAIC executive Yu Liguo as vice president of its automobile business, an internal email revealed, signaling that the Chinese electronics giant is ramping up its efforts to make its debut in the said sector.
The new VP will be responsible for coordinating the overall management of Xiaomi Auto, which will include business promotion, organization, and talent building at the Beijing headquarters (via Pandaily). Yu had joined Xiaomi in the second half of 2021 and brings extensive experience and contacts from the automobile industry.
This comes from his former position at BAIC, where he was in charge of the company’s new energy strategic planning, fixed investment, and joint venture cooperation. BAIC Group is a Chinese state-owned enterprise and holding company of several automobile and machine manufacturers located in Beijing.
During his time at BAIC, Yu led the creation of the Arcfox EV-maker brand and served as its president. The new Xiaomi Auto VP has also received a doctorate in engineering from the Beijing Institute of Technology.
Xiaomi has pledged to invest $10 billion into its EV business over the next decade, joining the already-crowded market with companies like Tesla, Xpeng, BYD, and others. It also revealed that its auto unit in Beijing will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 cars.
