All Apple Watch users, especially those who are running versions older than watchOS 8.7, have received a high-alert warning from the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology through its nodal organization, CERT-In. There are potential and major phishing risks in India. The problem is so serious that consumers are being advised to take quick action if they are impacted. The warning makes it clear that remote hackers are currently focusing their attention on the Apple Watch with deadly intentions as this department mostly deals with cyber security issues like phishing and hacking.

According to the government, the Apple Watch has several flaws that allow remote hackers to get through the targeted device’s security measures. It is thought that the hackers submit a specially constructed request that allows them to run any arbitrary code. Access to the user’s data is possible if successful.
The Cause
The buffer overflow in the AppleAVD component, according to the CERT-IN, is what leads to these vulnerabilities in Apple Watch; “an authorization issue in AppleMobileFileintegrity component; out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU and WebKit component; type confusion in Multi-Touch component; Multiple out-of-bounds write and memory corruption in GPU Drivers component; out-of-bounds read in Kernel component; and memory initialization in libxmI2 component.”
The solution
Fortunately, Apple has already released the latest watchOS 8.7 update, which addresses the aforementioned vulnerabilities and fixes the issues. As a result, owners of the Apple Watch may now defend themselves against phishing attacks by updating WatchOS 8.7. This is how:
- Ensure a Wi-Fi network is active on your Apple Watch.
- Navigate to the watch’s Settings app.
- After choosing General, click Software Update.
- If a new software update is available, a message will appear on the screen. After selecting Install, heed the prompts on the screen, and wait for an update to appear.
Refrain from worrying about the issue as soon as you update the operating system of the Apple Watch.
