The Xiaomi 12S Ultra had been announced as the company’s latest flagship grade devices that sit at the top of the 12 series of smartphones. Its large circular camera module is one of the highlighting aspects of its design, but a new teardown has revealed some interesting details regarding the components that are housed underneath the lens. So let’s have a look.

The teardown video was shared on YouTube by known tech channel, JerryRigEverything, who tore apart the flagship smartphone. In the video, the YouTuber states that the large camera module can also be an “aesthetic distraction to conceal what’s underneath.” And after removing the back panel, we have a clear view at the triple camera setup that is housed under the large camera lens.

Here, we can see that the main sensor is not the one in the middle, rather it is housed on the left. Furthermore, Zack Nelson also puts the 1 inch sensor size claim from Xiaomi to the test. He found that the Chinese tech giant was being “extremely generous,” but he also claimed that this is common in the industry. He measured the primary image sensor both diagonally and from the side, with both instance showing that the camera is slightly smaller than a full 1 inch.

To be fair, the sensor is still larger than every other cameras in the smartphone. Furthermore, JerryRigEverything also explains how Xiaomi didn’t falsely advertise its 1 inch size. Apparently, when talking about image sensor sizes, its not the physical size that is measured. Rather, its about the size of the circle that this sensor can fit inside of. This has been a measuring standards since the 80s.
