Pop-up cameras are a novel concept introduced on smartphones to help remove the front camera cutouts from the displays and to provide a truly immersive experience. The concept was however abandoned soon due to the complex mechanism and miniature machinery needed to operate these popup cameras.

Although pop-up cameras may no longer be popular among Android handsets, ViewSonic now claims that they play an important, if not “revolutionary,” function in larger-screen devices. In order to achieve this, the California-based company has introduced its first-generation “webcam docking” VG56V Series monitors.

ViewSonic’s new pop-up cameras have progressed beyond some early prototypes, with their own “fill-light” LEDs on either side. Additionally, they can be changed in terms of color temperature, and the entire docking camera can be turned 5 degrees in any direction.

These features help the VG56V Series alleviate concerns about improved lighting and angle, which are no longer limited to bloggers. In addition to that, the monitors incorporate their own dual speakers and 2-way microphones, as well as an “industry-leading audio focus function that eliminates unwanted background noise” from either end of a conference connection.

Furthermore, as ViewSonic points out, the VG56V Series has the potential to provide a more secure form of webcam, as users can easily push them back down into the body of these new monitors. The VG2456V and higher-end VG2756V-2K models are the only ones in the series at the moment, with FHD/2MP and 2K/5MP display resolution/docked camera specifications, respectively.

Both models also include general ViewSonic VG-series benefits such as a pivot-, tilt-, swivel-, and height-adjustable stand with a substantial handle and a 100×100 VESA mount. Although the HDMI is 1.4 and the DisplayPort is input-only, they both enable a wide range of ports for “full connectivity,” including 1 90W type-C connection and an RJ-45 jack for gigabit Ethernet.

The VG246V and VG2756V-2K are now listed by ViewSonic in the US online shop for US$358.99 and US$480.99, respectively. The latter, though, is currently available on Amazon for US$459.99.
