Immersion Corporation is a well-known company that is innovating in the field of touch feedback technology (also known as haptics). By providing technology solutions for mobile, automotive, gaming, and consumer electronics, Immersion is accelerating and scaling haptic experiences to create immersive and realistic interactions that engage users’ sense of touch. Recently, Immersion announced that it has taken legal action against several companies of the Xiaomi-Group in Germany, France, and India.

The legal action pertains to infringing on their patents that cover various uses of haptic effects in connection with smartphones. The company has filed complaints against Xiaomi-Group companies and their agents in the Düsseldorf Regional Court in Germany, the Tribunal judiciaire de Paris (Paris First Instance Civil Court) in France, and the High Court of Delhi in India.

Eric Singer, CEO of Immersion, expressed his pride in the company’s almost 30-year history of inventing innovative haptic technologies that allow people to engage with products and experience the digital world around them. Haptics is a crucial aspect of creating an immersive user experience in smartphones, and Immersion’s intellectual property is relevant to many of the most important ways in which haptic technology is and can be deployed.

While Immersion is pleased to see that Xiaomi has embraced the value of haptics and adopted their technology in smartphones, the company is taking steps to protect its business against the infringement of its intellectual property, which it has invested heavily in over decades of its history.

The complaints against Xiaomi assert the infringement of various patents, including the German and French parts of EP 2 463 752 B1, titled “Haptisches Feedback-System mit gespeicherten Effekten” and “Système de rendu haptique avec stockage d’effets,” respectively, and IN 304 396 (India) titled “Haptic Feedback System With Stored Effects.”
