Amazon is apparently looking to acquire diamond for its future plans in quantum computing and networking. The company is working in conjunction with a diamond miner for this move, so here are all the details.
The e-commerce giant is partnering up with known miners De Beers to develop the precious stone under laboratory conditions. These diamonds will be used to supposedly improve the speeds of quantum computing and networking. The project is being run by the tech giant’s Center for Quantum Networking as a part of its AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud service. So now, De Beers’ Element Six division is responsible for growing these diamonds to help improve their quantum networking speeds.

For those unaware, the quantum computing is typically believed to be the next step in computing technology. Unlike the conventional binary system, this technology offers a whole new way to compute that underpin all our current digital technologies. Furthermore, the standard fiber optic infrastructure is also not fast enough to keep up with this technology. Thus, Amazon is looking to solve the problem by utilizing different materials like diamonds. In a year, Element Six will apparently produce around 2 million of these diamond components.
To explain the technology, quantum computing utilizes principle in quantum physics that subatomic particles that can be found in two places at the same time. So, quantum computers relies on qubits rather than bits. This means that quantum systems are theoretically much more powerful than any of the current generation of supercomputers. Thus, these new diamonds will be used to make signal repeaters to relay the information stored in qubits through networks. Thanks to the hardness, the diamonds will enable stabler transmission than traditional repeaters.
