The world’s highest-selling smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 8, is in for a significant update. According to Mark Gurman, the company is planning to revamp the model’s S9 chip with the A15 technology. The S8 chip in the previous Apple Watch Series 8 was not a major update from its predecessor, the S7. However, the S9 chip will reportedly offer a far more significant leap forward in terms of power and efficiency.
The S9 Chip will be a significant upgrade from the S8 Chip
Gurman shared his insights on the “Power On” Discord channel for Bloomberg’s newsletter, where he confirmed that the new Apple Watch models are due for an updated SoC. He also mentioned that the new chip could be much more powerful than the previous generation. Moreover, he believes that the S9 chip would not just be a re-brand of the previous generation’s chip. Instead, it could be a completely new processor based on the A15 Bionic.
The A15 Bionic chip is currently used in the iPhone 13 series and is renowned for its outstanding performance. The 5-nanometer chip features a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. If the Apple Watch Series 9 chip uses similar technology to the A15 chip, it could result in improved performance and efficiency.
This news comes after Gurman’s report on watchOS 10, which will reportedly have a “fairly extensive upgrade” with many notable changes to the user interface. Gurman suggested that it is essential for watchOS to have a big year for the tenth version since Apple Watch hardware needs a major bump as compared to its previous versions to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
